I Can’t Sleep

Sleep is very important to our health. It is a time of healing. We need to shut down, and allow our body, mind, spirit, and soul to rest and to rejuvenate.

I Can’t Sleep

We hear of many people having sleeping difficulties. Many different aids are used to help with sleep, and some are very helpful – positive thinking, hypnotherapy, a hot bath, a quiet/dark/cool room, sex, a feeling of intimacy, herbal treatments, vitamin supplements, sleeping cartoontalking to someone, and doing physical work or exercise during the day. Some people may take over the counter medications and/or prescription medications.

In my homeopathic practice, people often come for a particular reason, a particular health concern. As they are talking about what bothers them, they sometimes mention that they don’t sleep well. This is a piece of the puzzle, of the whole. Some of what they mention:

  • difficulty falling asleep
  • falling asleep but then waking at a certain time and not able to go back to sleep
  • waking too early in the morning
  • not able to quiet their minds
  • restlessness
  • having bad dreams
  • waking often
  • overstimulated and overexcited
  • experiencing pain
  • sensitivity to the environment – noise, light, room temperature, clothing
  • internal temperature fluctuation – hot flashes

Five People

These five people came for homeopathic care, part of what bothered them was difficulty sleeping.

  • One woman often has difficulty sleeping. She experiences this during stressful times and in various ways. One way is not being able to fall asleep at the start of the night. She feels tension and heaviness in her body. It is as if, she says, I am not allowing myself to relax and sleep. This feeling gets worse as the night goes on. Other times, she falls asleep easily but wakes and is not able to fall back to sleep for awhile. She says, her mind goes and goes, filled  with thoughts of what happened during the day. Sometimes she feels very angry.
  • A boy has difficulty falling asleep. He may not get to sleep until 12 – 1 pm at night. Once he is asleep, he sleeps through the night, and it is difficult to wake him in the morning. He feels quite tired during the day. He is concerned about how others perceive him. Did he give the right answer in class? What will others think of him if he does give the wrong answer?
  • A teenager is a very light sleeper. He needs to have the room quiet and peaceful, with no disturbances. Snoring bothers him a lot. He prefers to sleep at home, where he knows it will be quiet and he won’t be disturbed. Being home and with his family is very important to him. It is difficult for him when he goes on trips, and is away from home.
  • A woman wakes often during the night. It is as if, she says, I am just taking naps during the night. She also is starting to experience night sweats, and her menstrual cycle is changing.
  • A young woman cannot fall asleep. This happens especially around exam time at the end of a school semester, or when there is something stressful going on in her life. She says too, that she thought she could nap the next day, but is unable to. Her mind keeps going; she is consistently analyzing her feelings and thoughts. Which path should I take? What should I do?

You can see that each person was different. It is always finding out about the person and how they experience what bothers them. Each of these five people needed a different homeopathic remedy; one that fit them. As they healed, what brought the person in for homeopathic care was better, and their sleeping improved. Everything is all connected.

*******

Getting a good night’s sleep is important to our health and to our well being. Having a bad night’s sleep occasionally happens. When we start having consistently bad nights, then we want help. As I wrote above, there are a lot of aids people use to help with sleeping. I invite you to see how homeopathy can be of help to you.

I would be happy to talk with you about your health concerns and how homeopathy can be of help. You can contact me here on my blog or through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com.

Women Taking Care Of Themselves, With Homeopathy

This post is about women, about women of all ages taking care of themselves. So often, women, and especially moms, don’t really take care of themselves. As I used to say when my sons were younger, I wasn’t even on the list.

Women are so busy taking care of their family members, friends and coworkers, and not always themselves. I have previously written a blog post about caregivers, and another blog post about moms being my ideal patient , which you may want to read. The post on moms, talks about how they are the hub, the center of the family, making sure everyone is taken care of. Now it is time for moms, for all women, young, old, middle-aged to take care of themselves.

Some Of The Women I Have Seen

In my practice, I have seen women of all ages and for various health concerns. There usually is some specific reason that has brought the woman in to see me – a physical complaint, an emotional issue, an ongoing health concern. In addition to this specific reason, there is her, the woman, and how she responds and feels on all levels (physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually) to what has happened in her life. Homeopathy addresses the whole of her. Through listening, observing, and understanding what is at the core of what is bothering her, a homeopathic remedy is given that is similar to what she is experiencing, to the totality of her. The homeopathic remedy stimulates her own healing process, strengthening her vital force or immune system, healing the specific reason why she came in, and also healing the totality of her.

Here is a little bit about some of the woman who have come in to see me for homeopathic care. Please know there is more to each of these women than what I have written here.

– a 19-year-old, who has very heavy periods, with severe cramping.                                                                                          grandma-612016_640

–  a woman going through menopause, who has hot flashes at night, making it difficult for her to sleep and then not feeling rested the next day at work. Having very emotional responses to experiences and situations in her life. Crying more.

– a woman in her 60’s who has had migraines for most of her life. Still having them after going through menopause.

– a woman figuring out what to do with her life. Has depressive types of thoughts. Taking care of her family. Asking herself, what can I do?

young girl–  a woman who is very involved in the workings of her family’s business. Experiences severe arthritic type pains in her hands, that she describes as a squeezing sensation. Has these pains more often when she is cleaning, using water. Very concerned on how the house is kept.

–  a woman who experiences discomfort when having sexual relations with her husband. She is not really happy in the relationship.

–  a woman who always has had someone helping her. Now she is a widow, and learning how to take care of herself, along with going through grieving for her husband.

– a young girl who has trouble sleeping, experiencing nightmares that keep her awake. During the day she is very irritable.

Some Of The Health Concerns Women Experience

Below is what may have brought the woman in for homeopathic care. Nothing is in isolation, as my teachers have said. Symptoms are not treated separately. It is the totality of the woman who is addressed, and the totality heals.

  • menstrual issues – cramps, PMS, bloating, headaches, late periods, heavy flow, clots, perimenopause, menopause, hot flashes, insomnia, other symptoms related that may come up or are exasperated during the menstrual cycle
  • digestive issues – bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food allergies and sensitivities, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease
  • sleep issues – insomnia, frequent waking, difficulty falling asleep, nightmares
  • pain – muscular, arthritic, nerve, acute or chronic, from an old injury
  • headaches – migraines, allergies, seasonal
  • anxiety, depression, ongoing grief, fears, phobias, focusing issues, memory issues
  • skin eruptions – eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, warts
  • respiratory – asthma, shortness of breath
  • emotional states – sadness, anger, outbursts
  • autoimmune illnesses – chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, polymyalgia
  • what is bothering you?

An observation: it may be that we women always have a cycle. Whether we are actually menstruating, or not menstruating. Whether we are pregnant, or have gone through menopause. This “cycle” time may be when a symptom, a feeling, a thought, a state of being, a health concern, or what bothers us, is more prevalent or more intense than usual.

What Is Bothering Your Child – Homeopathy Helps

two childrenI see people of all ages in my homeopathic practice. I especially like to work with children. I have a soft spot for them. Children respond so well to homeopathy, and often very quickly. There is less compensation, less intellectualizing, and a shorter history as compared to adults. A child’s vital force is strong, That is why you see a child get sick suddenly, run a highish fever, and are better suddenly.

WHAT Was Bothering This Boy

Over the years, I have learned that what may bother the mother, and usually that is why the child has come in to see me, may not be what bothers the child. Something else may be bothering the child. For example, one boy I saw several years ago had a cough. His mother was very concerned about it, and it bothered her a lot. But when I asked the boy what bothered him, he said that his younger sister was the boss of him. Hearing more about this, lead me to the selection of the homeopathic remedy that was similar to him, more so than hearing about the cough. The cough was part of the picture of the remedy, but this feeling of someone who is smaller than him and is bossing him around, was more at the core of what bothered him than the cough. He did well on the homeopathic remedy. He felt better about himself in relation to his sister, and to others, and the cough subsided.

Children Express Who They Are

My job is to understand, observe and hear what is bothering the child. (Of course, I do this with adults too.) Parents bring their child in for a particular reason. That reason is important, but I want to know what it is like for the child, such as with the boy I mentioned above.

I hear and observe what is bothering the child. This is expressed through the words they use; the sounds they make; the actions they take; their interactions with their moms, dads, siblings and others; their movements; their drawings; the stories they tell; the dreams they experience; their fears; their interests and what they like to do; their sensitivity to sounds/noises, to darkness/light, to being outside/inside and more. This applies to a child who is talking, to one who is not talking, yet, or doesn’t talk at all.

The parents help too, in that they tell me what they have noticed and observed about their child. Hearing about their child’s development, the birth, and the pregnancy maybe be helpful. But, most importantly it is to see and understand what bothers the child, and what they are expressing and experiencing. From this, a homeopathic remedy is selected that is similar to the child, which stimulates the child’s own healing process.

When A Child Is Having Difficulty Sleeping – Homeopathy Heals

teddy-bear-567952_640A friend of mine who works with children, and adults, as a vision therapist, told me recently that a lot of the children have been saying to her that they don’t sleep well. This was curious to me. Sleep is so very important. It is the time that we reset ourselves – our bodies, our minds, our emotions, and our spirits. It is a time of healing. To not sleep well, to me, means there is something that is blocking that innate ability to just slow down, turn off, feel and be safe, and sleep. There is some uproar, some imbalance, some disturbance within the child that prevents them to get the rest that they need.

Is Your Child Having Difficulty Sleeping?

How is your child’s sleep?

  • difficulty falling asleep
  • waking frequently
  • waking early and not able to go back to sleep
  • having nightmares – certain images come up
  • not wanting to sleep alone (this may not be a problem)
  • checking in with parents frequently during the night
  • light sleeper, when previously they were a not as sensitive to their environment
  • heavy sleeper – difficulty waking
  • changes in sleep habits and behaviors
  • self comforting behaviors
  • feeling anxious
  • feeling fearful
  • restlessness
  • emotional upsets – crying, tantrums, angry outbursts, stubbornness, sadness
  • a physical ailment that is keeping them from getting a good night’s sleep – chronic ear infections, stomachaches, headaches, eczema, allergies, asthma, coughs, colds, fevers
  • a change in the environment: a new sibling, a move, a parent being away for a length of time, a death, a divorce

Two Children

I want to tell you about two children I have seen over the years in my practice who had sleeping difficulties. The difficulty sleeping was part of what brought each child to homeopathy along with other concerns. The sleeping difficulty was a part of the whole picture of the child. By really seeing what was bothering the child, a homeopathic remedy was given that fit the child. It wasn’t a remedy for the sleeping difficulty, but a remedy for the child. Each was given a different homeopathic remedy. They both did well.

The first patient was a young girl who experienced a lot of nightmares at night. She also had difficulty falling asleep, and would wake up early. She wasn’t getting a full night’s sleep and didn’t feel rested during the day. This affected how she interacted with her family, and just how she was during the day. She was not always easy to be around. With the homeopathic remedy that was similar to her, she started to sleep better. The nightmares were much less, occurring rarely. She was easier to be around during the day. And when the sleeping became difficult again, that was a sign that she needed another dose of the remedy. I actually have not seen her for about year. I am thinking she is doing well.

The other patient was a young boy. He would go to bed at night, and during the first few hours, he would be up asking his mother when was his father coming home, if his father was away or working late. And if he heard any noises in the house, he would get up and ask his mother what are those noises? And maybe there is a burglar in the house? He would do this several times during the evening. With the homeopathic remedy that fit him, he no longer needed to check in with his mother when he went to bed at night. He was able to go to bed, fall asleep, and sleep through the night.

Healing With Homeopathy

I would be happy to talk with you on how homeopathy could be of help for your child, if they are experiencing a sleeping issue. Please know too, that if you as an adult having sleeping difficulties, homeopathy would be helpful for you too. For A child, And Their Parents, Who Is Using Homeopathic Remedies

children in a lineRecently a mom of a patient of mine wanted to know if there was anything written that she could find online or published that talks to children about homeopathy. I don’t know of anything that has been written. I thought this is wonderful idea, and I need to do it. I am writing this post to the child, or to the parents of the child, so that you can read it to your child.

The Homeopathic Remedy

You may or may not have taken many medications over the years. If you did they were pills. And perhaps you don’t want to take them anymore. The homeopathic remedy is in pellet form and they do look like pills, little white ones, but they aren’t the same as the pills that you have taken in the past.

The original form of the homeopathic remedy is liquid. When the homeopathic remedy is made at a homeopathic pharmacy, the vial or the small bottle is first filled with white sugar lactose pellets. The pellets come in different sizes and shapes. Then the liquid homeopathic remedy that is being used is poured into and onto these pellets. (I have seen this preparation at the Heiios Pharmacy in London.) The pellets absorb the liquid.

How To Take The Homeopathic Remedy

When you take the homeopathic remedy, the pellets are tipped into the lid of the vial, and then tipped into your mouth. We   homeopathy2say let them dissolve, don’t chew them. What you are tasting as the pellets are dissolving in your mouth is the sweetness of the pellets. Remember the pellets are sugar lactose, that is what you are tasting. You don’t taste the homeopathic remedy because there is no taste to the homeopathic remedy. You may have a taste of alcohol. This is because the substance that the homeopathic remedy is made from has been diluted in water and alcohol. Alcohol is a preservative, letting the homeopathic remedy last for a long period of time.

If you don’t want to take the pellets and have them dissolve in your mouth, you can dissolve 3 – 4 pellets in 4 ounces of spring or filtered water in a glass. Stir. Then take a teaspoonful of the homeopathic remedy. That is one dose. When the homeopathic remedy is diluted, you are bringing the homeopathic remedy back to its original form – liquid.

You most likely will not be taking the homeopathic remedy every day like you do with the medication you were taking before. Your parents will have been given instructions on how and when to give you the homeopathic remedy.

What Happens When You See A Homeopath

When you have met with a homeopath, such as myself, the homeopath has listened to you, has observed you, wants to know what bothers you, and what that is like for you. You may have been asked about what kinds of things you like to do, or fears you have, or dreams you have, or even what types of foods you have a strong craving for (you love) or have an aversion to (you hate). From all of this the homeopath chooses a homeopathic remedy that fits you. For example. some other child could have come in to see the homeopath and also have difficulty breathing at times. This child would need a different homeopathic remedy than you, because really they are experiencing the difficulty of breathing differently from the way you are experiencing it. The homeopathic remedy given to you, fits you.

kids-know-whats-good-for-them1How You Will Feel From Taking The Homeopathic Remedy

The homeopathic remedy will not do anything to you, such as making you clear your throat, or making you drowsy or sleepy or kind of sluggish, or give you tics or movements that you can’t control or make it that you aren’t hungry. These kinds of things may have happened when you took medications, the pills that you had taken. The homeopathic remedy is matching you. It is helping you heal yourself.

Whatever brought you in to see the homeopath will be better. Such as breathing easier. Not getting so frightened at things. Sleeping better at night. Not having nightmares. Not having a persistent, ongoing cough. Not feeling so angry at times. Not having the urge to bite or to hit or to kick someone. Not having the itching rash on your body. You are just feeling better.

I hope this has helped to know more about homeopathy.
