Symptoms Are A Sign Of The Person’s Sensitivity

We don’t feel well. We have a symptom, a discomfort, a pain, that bothers us. We want it to go away, to be relieved, to not have it anymore.

Symptoms, discomfort, pain are all signs and messages that something is not right. Yes, these signs bother us, but they are not isolated, they are not just to themselves. They are a reflection, a manifestation of something deeper in our bodies, in our beings, showing up in this symptom.

Our bodies speak to us. They tell us about ourselves. And often, it is so LOUD in its discomfort, pain, itching, discharging, fever, that we need to do something about it. The homeopath listens to this sign, and to the whole of the person. They want to know how this particular discomfort, pain, symptom, fits in/relates to the whole person.

A Woman Feeling Vulnerable

Recently, a woman I know had a discomfort in her navel area. Years ago, she had had a laparoscopy and scar tissue developed in her navel from this procedure. She never had any problem with this area until several years ago, and now she was having a recurrence again. The area was painful, inflamed, and swollen which made it very difficult to sit. She was using hot compresses to help relieve and heal the area, wanting the area to start draining.

She was going to an event soon, and was feeling stressed about it. There was an inner conflict. She had been figuring out what would be the best way for her to go to this event. And then her navel became inflamed. She was feeling fearful. How can she travel? And she was fearful that this area could get worse. She decided it was time to see her homeopath.

She described the area of her navel as being very soft and vulnerable. Nothing was          pomegranate-open-196800_960_720 surrounding the area to protect it; there was nothing hard to cover the vulnerability. It was completely open and vulnerable to whatever came along. And it being so soft, open, and vulnerable, it could be easily hurt and injured. This is how she described the area and how she felt about going to the event. She knew that no one would actually injure this area or hurt her physically. But she felt very vulnerable, with the feeling that she might be “attacked” (her word), a verbal attack, and it would hurt her, injure her.

The navel area was analogous to how she felt about herself in the world. She felt that she was so soft and vulnerable, and needed to protect herself from being hurt, being injured. She needed to be hard; the hardness would protect her, it would surround her. The injuries could be physical, but more so, she felt the injuries could be from when she had interactions with people. That she she could be hurt by what they said. This was her sensitivity. (There is more to her case than what I have written here.)

A Healing

arnica-468434_960_720In homeopathy, the homeopath hears/observes/witnesses the person’s sensitivity. The sensitivity is expressed through how they talk about what bothers them; how they talk about their symptoms. And the person experiences this sensitivity on all levels – physically, emotionally, mentally.

As the person heals, the sensitivity becomes quieter and quieter. With this woman, as she heals, she will not feel as vulnerable, open and soft. She will not feel as though she needs something hard surrounding, enclosing, and protecting her from getting hurt and injured. She can be more of herself, and be part of the world more fully.

Symptoms are an expression of the sensitivity. They are a guide. Homeopathy uses them to learn more about the sensitivity. It is the sensitivity that quiets and heals, and with that, the symptoms, the navel with this woman, heals too.

What are your symptoms? How are they expressive of your sensitivity?

We Each Have Our Own Sensitivity

We all have our own sensitivity. Why does something bother one person, but the very same thing doesn’t bother another person?  I often give the example of a skin eruption on someone’s hand. For one person, it bothers them so much to the point that they will seek out any and all kinds of treatment to help. Another person, hardly notices it, or if they do, it doesn’t bother them. They live with it. One person is bothered by it, the other is not. One is sensitive about it, the other is not.

Different Sensitivities

Some sensitivities that people may experience are:                                                                                                                          dandalion

  • to noise, to crowds, to fabrics, to foods, to temperatures, to smells, to certain types of people, to violence, to blood, to over stimulation, to under stimulation, to pain, to pressure, to situations, to traveling, to dirt, to germs, and more.

Parts of the body or the functioning of parts of the body that may be more sensitive in someone are:

  • the stomach – digestive issues, the head – migraines, frequent colds, sore throats, respiratory issues, menstrual issues, hormonal issues – in both women and men, skin eruptions, anxiousness, depression/melancholy, fears and phobias, muscular aches and pains, sleep issues, nightmares, eating issues, and more.

Hearing The Sensitivity – A Case of A Boy

The sensitivity is what I hear when someone comes to see me for homeopathy. I hear what bothers the person. I hear how they experience their sensitivity. I hear how they live with the sensitivity, either compensating, making it go away, accepting it, or avoiding it. I hear how the sensitivity affects their life.

I want to tell you about a boy whose parents brought him in for homeopathic care. He was 20 months old at the time. The boy was experiencing nasal congestion, fevers, and possible ear infections, in which several courses of antibiotics had been given. The antibiotics had helped for four weeks, then the congestion, the fevers, the discomfort in the ear returned. He went through this cycle for several months.

As I spoke to the parents and observed the boy, I saw that he had a sensitivity to noise and sounds. His mother told me that when a sound was loud, or if he heard a far off sound, such as an airplane, actually hearing it before she did, he would run to her. She thought that the sounds were scary or frightening to him. He was not saying how he experienced the sounds through words, but showing through his behaviors, reactions, and responses to the sounds. There was a sensitivity to sound. I wondered if the sounds felt uncomfortable or painful to him in some way. Whatever it was, the sounds and noises were too much for him. I really didn’t know how the sounds specifically affected him, but they bothered him greatly, in some way.

boy with truck 2 cartoonThis sensitivity to sound was also expressed as he played. He would make the sounds of trucks, imitating the noises that trucks make as they move, back up, carry things, and push materials. To me, this also showed how sensitive he was to sound. He heard things well, and could reproduce the sounds that he heard.

He has done well with the homeopathic remedy that was similar to what he was experiencing. He hasn’t needed to have any more antibiotics. He has had a few fevers and nasal congestion, but has been able to move through them without any lingering problems. I would be curious to know how his sensitivity to sound and noises are. I would think that he may have less of a sensitivity to them.

Healing With Homeopathy

The sensitivity to sounds is not why the boy’s parents brought him in for homeopathic care. But this sensitivity was very characteristic of him as an individual person, and very much part of him. Homeopathy looks at, and focuses on the whole person. We all of our own sensitivity, and sensitive areas in our body. This is where we may experience symptoms, discomfort, or flare ups when we are experience situations that are stressful physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. With homeopathic care, the sensitivity becomes less and quiets down.

What is your sensitivity? I invite you to contact me either here through the blog or through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com  and set up a Get Acquainted Call. I do work with people who don’t live near me using Skype.

Children Who Are “Stressed”, Homeopathy Helps

With two calls this week about potential patients, I thought it was time to write this blog post. I had written a blog post about stress and had mentioned at the end of it (STRESS and Homeopathy) that we don’t often use the word “stress” when talking about children. But children do respond to things happening in their lives, are stressed, and have an automatic response to outside pressures, just as adults do.

Both phone calls were to see if homeopathy would be helpful for a child. One was younger than 5, the other was a preteen. Both children have seen or are seeing a therapist;  neither have started any kind of western medication.  Children do very well with homeopathy. It is a wonderful time to start homeopathy when they are young. I have been saying since these two phone calls that these children are at a fork in the road. If they go down the western medicine road, they will most likely be given medication, and that often snowballs, leading from one medication to another one. These two children are both too young to start this, and why do this to children anyway?

The following are some of the symptoms and behaviors we may see in a child who is having difficulties and is stressed: fears, phobias, depression, oppositional type of behaviors, acting out, bed wetting, PTSD type of symptoms, withdrawal, tantrums, difficulty concentrating, anxiousness, anger, crying, sadness, chronic colds or stomachaches, headaches, difficulty sleeping, nightmares, eating difficulties, digestion issues, skin eruptions and more. Actually anything, and everything. It is just how the child manifests his stress.

child upset or worried

In some ways, children don’t have as much control over their environment as adults do. (Although adults may feel that they don’t have any control either, and that may be part of their automatic response).  The child may be responding and reacting to different things or events that are happening in his life.  The event or situation may have triggered the child’s sensitivity, and thus symptoms and behaviors are being expressed, some of them listed above.

I know as parents, we all do our best and want our children to be happy, healthy, safe, to be loved, loving, and develop into their full potential as human beings. With all our good intentions as parents, we sometimes don’t have control over things that do happen to our children, or to us. Things happen in life; changes occur; and we just go with it as best as we can.  Some of these events and situations could be: how a person is being treated, family issues, divorce, separation, financial changes, loss of a family member, poverty, reaction to medications or vaccines, malnutrition, abuse, disability, war, exposure to chemicals or drugs, food sensitivities, a difficult birth or start to life and more.

When someone brings their child to homeopathy, the homeopath is learning about this child’s sensitivity. This is done through observation, listening to both the parents and the child, finding out about dreams, finding out what bothers them, the child’s likes and dislikes, and more. With all of this, the homeopath gives a homeopathic remedy that is similar. The remedy stimulates the child’s healing process, and the sensitivity quiets down, the automatic response lessens, and the symptoms ease off. For example, the bed wetting has stopped, oppositional behavior has eased, fears have quieted down, coughs and breathing difficulties are no longer occurring. The situation may have not changed, but there is a shift in the child, and now he is able to move on, and handle things better in his life, perhaps even changing his situation if he can. A healing has occurred.
