Listening To Yourself

Listening, observing, finding out how the person experiences what bothers them is what I do as a homeopath. I think I am a good listener, to others, but maybe not so good at listening to myself, hearing myself.

Are We Listening To Ourselves?

For me, sometimes, I am easily swayed or influenced by what other people say to me, or are doing. I need time afterwards to sift through, and process the information and energy of others. As a society, we are bombarded by all sorts of information, almost instantaneously. And from that we often think we need to be doing this or that, feeling this or that, comparing ourselves to others, and ultimately not being in tune with ourselves. We are not listening to our own needs and wants, and who we are as an individual person.

Listening is not just with our ears. It is how we feel, inside. Our gut feeling. Our bodies can tell us a lot: our physical reactions and our emotional responses. These reactions and responses are often autonomic; we go there immediately. Physically, we may get sick (really telling ourselves slow down and listen): our head hurts, our stomach grumbles, a rash breaks out, we breath shallowly, we come down with a cold. Emotionally, we may feel angry, fearful, shameful, irritated, annoyed, impatient, bored, or hurt.

woman on phone

I sometimes think we may need to call ourselves on the phone, so we will actually listen to ourselves. “Hey, Pam, I wanted to tell you this….”

Listening To Ourselves

Listening:

  • this doesn’t feel right to do, or feels right to do – a relationship, a job, an opportunity, an event. This does feel right.
  • don’t know what to do further in this creative work, will wait. Now I know what to do!
  • this person is doing this activity or has this belief, should I do this or believe this too? Shall I go along with this person or not?
  • following a dream, a passion, a trip that you have always wanted to do.
  • should I? Shouldn’t I? (Shoulds are usually something to avoid.)
  • my body is not feeling right.
  • time to rest, even if others are continuing.
  • am I reacting?
  • what am I feeling?
  • the group is doing this, it doesn’t feel right to me.
  • even if this person is an expert, I will get another expert’s opinion.
  • I am going to be quiet for awhile, so I can hear my voice, listening to what I am saying.
  • am I speaking my voice with other people?
  • am I speaking and hearing my own voice?
  • what does my voice sound like?
  • what is my voice saying?

Healing                                                                                                                                                  pond-1890643_1280

To listen we need to be quiet, taking the time to be with ourselves. Going to a nurturing physical space, and a nurturing space within us. Honoring and respecting what we hear and what we feel. Being with it.

Listening is a muscle that we develop the more we use it. It is a practice. It is healing to listen to ourselves, and to be listened to by others, professionals and/or friends.

Are you listening to yourself?

I invite you to do so. And if I can be of any help regarding listening, and/or with homeopathy, I invite you to contact me here on this blog, or through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com.

What Is Bothering You?

When I first sit down with a patient at the initial consultation, I ask “what is bothering you?”, “Why are you here?” As the consultation progresses, I may ask at some point, “from all of what you have said, what is bothering you the most?” And the patient tells me more about this. It is often our door in to finding out about the wholeness of this person.

What Is Bothering The Person

What is bothering the person is very individual, very indicative about the person, and often a manifestation of the root cause.  Here are a few of what patients have said to me that is bothering them:

  • My nose is running all the time. I have to wipe it. It is annoying.
  • It feels as if the food is rotting in my stomach.
  • I am so anxious.
  • I have difficulty breathing.
  • My younger sister is the boss of me.
  • My neck hurts all the time.
  • I feel as thought there is dripping in my ear.
  • The skin eruption on my face doesn’t go away.
  • There are bumps on my skin.
  • I am not functioning like I did before the accident.
  • I am feeling so weak after having the flu.
  • I am having these persistent thoughts that scare me.
  • It upsets me so much how other people treat animals and older people.
  • Loud sounds are uncomfortable to me. (A child runs to his mother when hearing loud sounds.)

You can see how varied it is. And there often is no name to it, nor a name of an illness. It is a sensation, a feeling, a fear, a physical symptom, a thought, a response, a reaction.

I find it very interesting that what can bother one person, such as a skin eruption, may not be bothering another person who also has skin eruptions. This shows me over and over again how individual we all are. My job always, is to see, observe, learn about this person in front of me, and how they experience what bothers them, and how they experience their life. I am learning about the world they live in.

The Totality

The totality is like this photograph. What is bothering the person is the drop in the drop of waterwater. The ripples from this drop are: the other symptoms the person may be experiencing; how what bothers the person affects them; how the person perceives things that happen to them; their fears; their dreams; the language they use to express themselves; the gestures they make; their history and more. The ripples and the drop are the totality of the person.

What Is Bothering You?

When does what is bothering someone become too much, and that they then want help?

A lot of us live with or through what is bothering us. We accept it, even though it bothers us and affects our lives. Perhaps it is when the pain is too much – the physical, the emotional or the mental pain. Perhaps, it is when we don’t like what is happening or how we feel. Perhaps, it is when we don’t want to feel this way anymore. Perhaps, it is when we want to be better, really better. And perhaps, it is when we see how important it is to take care of ourselves.

I have found that people come to homeopathy because something has been bothering them for awhile. They may have gone to other health practitioners, including western medicine, and have felt that they are not better. This is often when they come to homeopathy.

Urinary Tract Infections/UTI’S – Homeopathy Can Help

For the last several months, I have heard of several people experiencing Urinary Tract Infections. Unfortunately, UTI’s are very common. UTI is a term that includes urethritis, cystitis and pyleonephritis. They can be very uncomfortable, painful, and affect our daily lives, tremendously.

Treatments For An Urinary Tract Infection

People often go to see their physician, have a culture taken, and are proscribed antibiotics. There are also the recommendations of drinking more water, drinking cranberry juice, and using herbal supplements, such as Nature’s Way, Urinary With Cranberry. These treatments all can be very helpful. For some people though, these treatments are not enough, and the person continues to have the UTI, or that the person experiences recurring UTI’s.

Homeopathy Is Helpful

There are many homeopathic remedies that can be helpful when someone is beach waterexperiencing an UTI. In homeopathy, it is always looking at the individual person and seeing how they are experiencing their heath concern.

There are the common/general symptoms that many people may experience when they have an UTI, such as painful urination, a drawing sensation as one urinates, urging to urinate frequently, chills, fever, and discomfort or pain in the bladder or on the lower back. Some people may not even experience any symptoms at all.

In addition to the common/general symptoms, a homeopath would want to know more about how the UTI is experienced, specifically for this person, such as:

  • what is the discomfort like
  • how is the person’s emotional state
  • is there an odor or color to the urine
  • consistency of the urine – cloudy, clear
  • flow of the urine – by drops or steady
  • what is the pain/discomfort like
  • location of pain
  • what was happening before they developed the UTI
  • are there any other symptoms
  • what makes it better or worse
  • how often do they experience them (acute: one time, or chronic: occurring often)
  • is there any thing else that is bothering them

All of this makes a whole picture of the person. It is the person who is being treated, not the symptoms nor the disease name. A homeopathic remedy is given that is similar to this picture, stimulating the person’s own healing ability.

Some Homeopathic Remedies

Here are brief descriptions of five homeopathic remedies that may be helpful when someone is experiencing an UTI. I don’t suggest that someone treat themselves.

homeopathy pelletsBy reading each description, you can see how different each homeopathic remedy is, perhaps subtly different. This is the same when a person is experiencing an UTI; they experience it uniquely to them. For example, you will read that Apis has no thirst, and Cantharis has unquenchable thirst.

Aconite – sudden retention of urine from a chill or a fright. Painful urging to urinate. Scanty, red, hot urine. Anxiety on beginning to urinate. Attacks are sudden and violent. Restless. Fearful.

Apis – burning and soreness during urination. With chills and fever, swelling, and scanty urination. Urine, -scanty, last drops burn and smart. Thirstless. Intolerant of heat. Worse: right side, touch pressure, heat. Better: uncovering, open air, cold bath.

Berberis – burning pains. Pains feel deep inside kidneys extending to bladder. Sensation as if urine is retained, after urination. Backache. Urethra burns when not urinating. Urine – thick, yellow, sandy or slimy sediment. Symptoms change rapidly. Worse: motion, standing, any sudden jarring movement.

Cantharis – persistent and violent urging. Passes only a few drops at a time. Painful urination. May be accompanied by aching in the small of the back. Pains are burning, cutting or smarting. Intense and rapid onset of symptoms. Cystitis. Unquenchable thirst, but with aversion to all liquids. Worse: by urinating, touch, drinking cold water or coffee. Better: gentle massage.

Mercurius corrosivus – persistent urging with intense burning. Urination drop by drop. Constant urging to urinate, need to go but cannot. Straining. Scanty. Urine may be mixed with a little blood. Cystitis. Perspires after urination. Person looks pinched, shriveled, melancholic. Worse; evening, night. Better: when resting.

The Sensation That You Are Feeling Is Expressive Of You

In my homeopathic practice, I often hear a patient talk about a particular sensation or feeling they are experiencing. Here are some of what I have heard patients say and express to me in words, sounds, gestures, movements and images:

  • It is as if there is water dripping in my ear.
  • I feel the anxiety in the pit of my stomach.
  • I feel really small, and she is the boss of me.
  • I have the fleeting thought of stabbing myself in the abdomen area.
  • It is as if something, like a insect, is running up and down my legs.
  • It is as if my naval is weeping.
  • It is as if the food is rotting in my stomach.
  • It goes pop.
  • It feels as though it is locked up, something clamped onto it, or restricted. (Talking about vocal cords.)
  • A particular sound will be made.
  • A movement with their hands, or body.

The Sensation

The particular sensation may be what brought the person in for homeopathy. It is something that branches pouring downbothers them a lot, and may be interfering with their life. They may have gone to their medical physician to find out what this could be. And after an exam and even some tests, the physician may have not found anything that was wrong – they could not see, hear, nor observe what or where this sensation was coming from.

In homeopathy, the sensation or feeling does not need to be seen, heard, nor observed, meaning that there may not be actually something physically present. The fact that the person experiences this sensation or feeling is enough. The sensation is an expression of what bothers them deep within, and it is being manifested in this sensation that they are experiencing.

Wanting To Know More

I want to know more about the sensation that the person is experiencing. I will say, “tell me more”, “how does that feel”, “what is the experience of _____”, or “how do you feel it in your body”?

The person will start to describe the sensation. They will tell me what happens when they experience the sensation; how if feels to them; how it effects their life and more. Often an image comes up that reflects how the person experiences the sensation. All of this adds to understanding what the person is experiencing, what is bothering them, what they want to be better.

Why I Write This Post

I write this post to those people who may be experiencing some sensation in their body – a discomfort, a pain, a difficulty in functioning – and may have had it checked out with their physician, and nothing was seen to be wrong. On some level it is good that nothing is wrong, yet the sensation is still being experienced and is still bothering the person.

Why Would You Want a Holistic Healing With Homeopathy?

I had written my personal “why” in the post WHY DO I PRACTICE HOMEOPATHY? Now, I would like to write what your “why” may be.

(Simon Sinek writes about your “why” in his book “Start With Why”.)

*******

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Wanting to feel better. Whether it is regarding a physical condition or an emotional      concern.

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Wanting a deep healing. Wanting a healing that goes to the root of where the               sunset-with-bluessymptoms that you are experiencing and bothering you are coming from.

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Wanting a healing, and not a palliating nor a band aid. Perhaps you are tired of taking medications that are not healing, and that may also be producing side effects that in some ways are worse than what the medication is being given for.

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Wanting to be heard. Wanting to be in a safe, protective environment, where whatever you say, show, or share is seen and heard. Being seen as the individual that you are.

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Understanding that you are not a label. You are not the diagnosed “disease” name. You are your own unique being.

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Wanting all of your being to be better. The physical, the emotional, the mental, the spiritual. And knowing that all parts are connected, that you are not just one part. That you are a whole being.

Why would you want a holistic healing using homeopathy?

Knowing that you are a being that has a wonderful ability to heal yourself – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. And that to tap into that healing ability, you sometimes need help in the form of guidance and nurturing.

Healing The Child, And The Whole Family With Homeopathy

I enjoy working with children and their families. Children respond very well to homeopathy. Their vital energy, vital force, chi is very strong. That is why you see that a child will often be suddenly ill, run higher fevers than adults do, and then are better, quickly. A child’s response moves fast, and sometimes seems to be extreme.

What I See In My Homeopathic Practice

In my practice, I have seen children for many different health concerns. Some of them are:

  • Various skin eruptions – eczema, vitiligo                                                                             child-looking-at-sea
  • Behavior issues that come from feeling angry, sad, fearful
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Chronic ear infections and earaches
  • On going cough
  • Digestive issues – stomachaches
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches

With some of the children I have seen, I have thought that seeing the parents, or one of the parents, would be helpful for the child’s healing. The family is a whole and the members of the family make up this whole. What happens in the family, and to one of the members, can often influence and affect the family as a unit and its members, such as the child that has come for homeopathic treatment. Life happens. Some of these life happenings are:

  • The interactions between family members
  • The health history of the family members – present, and even going back a few generations
  • The cultural background and influences
  • The changes that the family has experienced, such as moving to a new country, a new state, a new school, a new job for a parent
  • The changes in the family unit itself, such as a separation/divorce, a death, a birth, a marriage.
  • The changes in living conditions – physically, environmentally, emotionally
  • The health of the family members – ongoing illness

A Family

A family to me is a group who consider themselves close. They may live together. They family-in-chalkmay not live together. The parents could be a mom and dad, two moms, two dads, one mom, one dad, a grandparent, a sibling, a friend, another relative. The child can be biological, adopted, be born by a surrogate mother. A family can be two people, and many, many more. An animal, a dog or a cat, can also be part of the family. A family is what the people themselves consider as their family.

Healing – The Child And The Family

I often see that as a child does better, in their health, the family does better too. And the same can be said that as the family does better, the child does better.

Chamomilla – The Homeopathic Remedy

Many people drink Chamomile tea, especially at night, to help them relax so they may have a better night’s sleep. The homeopathic remedy Chamomilla is often used for children who are teething. I want to talk more about the homeopathic remedy Chamomilla.

Three People Who Benefited From Using The Homeopathic Remedy Chamomilla

Recently I gave Chamomilla to a woman who was having pain in her right ear. She had had some pain in her temple, forehead, and the lower right side of her head a week before. The pain settled in the right ear. It was pulsating and throbbing. It was not a constant pain, but when she did experience it, she found it difficult to do other activities because the pain genuine-chamomile-58642__480was so present. Over a two day period, she took several doses of the homeopathic remedy Chamomilla, the pain diminished and then finally went away.

Years ago, I gave Chamomilla to a young woman who felt very angry. If someone said something to her that seemed like an insult or she thought was rude, she felt very hurt and angry. It was if it was a blow to her, not a physical one, but an emotional blow. She did very well with the homeopathic remedy Chamomilla.

I mentioned above about a teething baby being helped with Chamomilla. The baby may be biting because the pain and the discomfort felt in their gums is unbearable. The biting actually may ease the pain, and may be the way he is expressing anger from being in such intense pain.

Chamomilla

Chamomilla is a plant from the Compositae Family. The homeopathic remedies Arnica Montana and Calendula are also in this plant family, and have the same sensitivity. This sensitivity is to being injured, experiencing a trauma, feeling bruised and sore, feeling abused, and feeling beaten. The sensitivity can be experienced both physically and emotionally. The second case I give shows how someone would feel injured on an emotional level.

Here are links to posts I have written on Arnica Montana and Calendula. These posts talk about the use of these two remedies for first aid situations.

Characteristics Of The Homeopathic Remedy Chamomilla

Here are a few characteristics of Chamomilla that would guide a homeopath to choosing this remedy for someone:

  • unbearable pain
  • pains are throbbing, sharp like a sudden attack
  • capricious -wants something now, and then when it is given doesn’t want it anymore
  • extremely angry, irritable – difficult to be around,  may not want to be touched
  • wants to be carried
  • worse at night, from cold air
  • better from cold applications
  • may have a fever
  • one check is red and hot, and the other one is pale and cool
  • stool is like a chopped spinach consistency

*******

I write about Chamomilla because it is used very often by people, as a tea and as a homeopathic remedy. By giving you some information about the homeopathic remedy, you can start to see that each homeopathic remedy has their own unique picture, just as each of us do.

If I can be of any help to you or your loved ones, I invite you to contact me here on this blog or through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com. And enjoy your cup of tea!
