Unfolding Like A Flower – Meeting The Patient Where They Are – Healing With Homeopathy

In a way, getting to know a patient as I am working with them is like an unfolding flower, seeing one layer and then another one. A flower unfolds and opens up, first starting out as a tightly, closed bud, and then slowly or rose-2634412_960_720quickly opening up to its fullest bloom. A patient does the same thing, starting with the complaint, often something physical, and then going deeper into what is bothering them.

The Layers

It may be that the patient says, “I have this disease, this illness.” And they give a name. “This is what I want to be healed.”  This is the first layer. It is factual and very physical. For example:

  • Someone has had a fall and bruised their leg. They use the homeopathic remedy Arnica montana to help with the trauma of the fall and the bruising of their leg.
  • I person says that have a particular disease or health condition such ADHD, fibromyalgia, asthma, eczema. What homeopathic remedy would you give me?  The thinking here is that the person has this, a name of an illness, and wants a medicine for this particular illness.

In the next layer, the person may say they have a particular illness, AND, they will start to talk about very specific symptoms that they are experiencing. These symptoms may not be what are typically listed under the disease name, but are unique to this individual. At this layer the person is starting to tell more about themselves as an individual person, and what bothers them. It is not just the name of the illness.  An example:

  • A sore throat. The person says that it is on the right side. Very sore. When they swallow it hurts. The sore throat came on suddenly. The pain is throbbing and pulsating. There is a fever. The person feels almost delirious.

At deeper layers, the patient will talk even more about themselves and how they are experiencing what bothers them in their life. They will talk about emotional reactions and responses. They will describe how they experience the pain or the discomfort, and how it affects them. Often, a particular sensation will be described, that is experienced on many levels. They may mention dreams and fears. The homeopath starts to see a thread running through what the patient is saying, that connects the physical, the emotional, and the mental states. This all makes up the whole person. The patient is talking more on an energy level, than a physical one. For instance:

  • A woman tells me about the arthritic type pains she experiences in her hands. The pain makes it difficult for her to hold and grasp objects. Cooking, and she does a lot of cooking, and doing household tasks are extremely painful for her. She says the pain feels as if her hands are being squeezed really really tightly. She makes a hand gesture when she is talking about the squeezing. (I watch for hand gestures, recurring hand gestures. They express energy.) Her husband is having business difficulties. She says that she and her husband have been taken advantaged of by other people, people they had trusted. She would like to get back at this people, take revenge on them.

Meeting The Patient Where They Are

women-friends-1577910_960_720Just as a flower unfolds, so does a person. Starting with one layer and then moving to another one, unfolding. Each patient is different. Whatever is the top layer is what is heard, seen, and observed by the homeopath. It is what the patient is experiencing at the time. The homeopath meets the patient where they are, at that layer. One homeopathic remedy may be used and is healing. Other times, a series of homeopathic remedies are used as different layers emerge. It is always meeting the patient where they are.

I ask you: What do you want to be better? How are you feeling? What is bothering you? How do you experience what is bothering you? This is where we start.

During Natural Disasters, Homeopathy Is Very Helpful

Homeopathy can be very helpful when there is a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, a tornado, an earthquake, flooding, and fires. The person may be experiencing fright, panic, injury, shock, loss of loved ones, loss of a home and more.

It is looking at the disaster as an acute situation, and addressing the person for what they are experiencing now from the disaster. The disaster may  exasperate someone’s present health concerns, or be a trigger for a health concern that develops later. Often people say, I was never well since this happened, or these symptoms started when my house burned down, for example. Homeopathy is helpful for right when the disaster is occurring, and for later on. For later on, I would suggest seeing a homeopath. And if you help yourself now, you maybe helping yourself to not develop something in the future.

Some Homeopathic Remedies

Here are a few homeopathic remedies that are helpful when the person is going through the disaster. The reaction can be emotional or a first aid injury. I have given a short description for each homeopathic remedy. Observe how you or your loved one homeopathic-remedies-bottles-different-35796044feel, and match it to the description. I have given remedies for trauma, anxiousness, sprains, and digestive issues. This information applies to one’s pets too. If you don’t see anything that is helpful, you may want to google what is bothering you and homeopathy, if you have access to a computer.

ACONITE – feeling very fearful, anxious and panicky after the shock and occurrence of the disaster, or during the disaster. Cannot calm down. Feels terrified and restless. May have particular fear of death, and even predicting that they will die. Sleep is restless, tossing and turning, waking up feeling very fearful. Symptoms come on suddenly.

ARNICA MONTANA – for body injury, shock from an injury, or just shock from the trauma of the disaster. Person feels sore, bruised, and will say “I am fine”, even though they are not. They don’t like to be touched.

IGNATIA – grief from loss: loss of home, possessions, loved ones. Crying or whimpering in sleep. Frequent sighing and yawning, while awake.

RHUS TOX – sprain and strain after heavy physical work, when the person has not limbered up. Pains are worse when beginning to move, feels better once moving, like a “rusty gate”. Acts on torn ligaments and tendons. Use after ARNICA. Joint is hot, swollen and painful.

RUTA GRAV – use if Rhus tox fails. Torn and wrenched tendons or ligaments. Bruised periosteum (bone covering). Especially good for stiff, sore wrists, ankles, or knees. Dislocation of joints, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder. Use after ARNICA.

ARSENICUM ALBUM – food poisoning, after eating bad fruit, fish or meat. Worse at night with much tossing and turning. May have vomiting and diarrhea at the same time. Chilly, restless, anxious. Weak. Feeling of panic – “will I live?” Needs some reassurance, yet not easily reassured. Thirsty for sips of water or warm drinks.

NUX VOMICA – wants to vomit, but cannot. Chilly and intensely irritable.  Overeating. And over use of food, liquor, work.

Using Homeopathic Remedies

A 30C or 200C potency would be good. Use what you have available – 6C, 12C, 12X, 30X. Some people may own a homeopathic kit and have these homeopathic remedies on hand, others may need to purchase them. Perhaps a friend or family member may have a kit. Know too, that if you don’t have the homeopathic remedy on hand now, and get one in a week or so, and you are still feeling the same way as your now, the homeopathic remedy will be helpful then.

A dose is 3 – 4 pellets. You let the pellets dissolve in your mouth. Homeopathy can be used along with western medicine.

The Healing Process – The Homeopathic Consultation (Part 2)

I want to continue talking about the homeopathic consultation. As I wrote in Part 1, it is always finding out about the person, and then giving them the homeopathic remedy that is similar to what they are experiencing. In this post, I want to talk about the healing process, the course of treatment.

The Course Of Treatment

Quite often over the course of treatment, more than one homeopathic remedy will be needed. The treatment starts with one homeopathic remedy, which is similar to what the person is experiencing. Follow up appointments let us see how the person is moving through their treatment. This first homeopathic remedy may be used for awhile. Or, after a period of time, 15 days, a month, several months time, another homeopathic remedy may be needed. As the person is moving and healing other rock-layers-3578_1280symptoms, older symptoms and states emerge. A different homeopathic remedy will be needed at this time. In a way, it is like one layer is exposed, and heals, and other layers emerge, going deeper to the core of the person. It is a process of healing.

A Patient

I want to tell you about a patient I have worked with for the past 18 months. I gave her several homeopathic remedies over this period of time. She initially came to see me because she had been in an accident. She suffered a head and brain injury. She was going for western medical treatment, and was doing well with it. She also wanted homeopathy to be part of her care. Her injury situation was more than a first aid situation. My job was to find out about her – what was bothering her and how she was experiencing it.

The first homeopathic remedy helped her a lot. She was feeling better, and was able to do more of the activities that she had found difficult to do after the accident. She was able to use technological devices better; focus and stay on task longer without feeling discomfort; and was experiencing less discomfort, brain fog and dizziness. And she continued to keep improving.

During this period of time, she was starting to go through menopause. The homeopathic remedy helped her through this as well, although the menstrual and menopausal symptoms were not the reason why she had come in for homeopathic treatment. To me, this shows how homeopathy is truly a holistic medicine, and addressing the whole person.

About 9 months into her treatment, at one of the follow up appointments, what she was saying that bothered her was completely different from what had bothered her before. Now, she was feeling very out of control, and that it was easy to be controlled by external things and other people. She described it as if she was being sucked dry, penetrated, and engulfed. She expressed this in a very emotional way, and said this is something she has experienced before in some of her relationships. This was a new picture of her, a new layer. I gave her a different homeopathic remedy. She did well with it.

About 6 months after that, again she was talking differently. What was bothering her now was her neck and shoulders. This was something she has experienced off and on most of her life, although, after having been in the accident, the neck discomfort was not upper most for her. In fact, she didn’t bring it up until later on, until she was doing better from the accident. I gave her another homeopathic remedy that addressed this new layer.

How Healing Occurs

This patient is a good example of how healing occurs, showing that there are different layers to a person. What was bothering her the most after the accident was the difficulties she was having from the head and brain injury – functioning, discomfort, and pain.  As this was doing better, another layer emerged. This layer sand-spiralhad an emotional feeling of being engulfed. As this was doing better, the discomfort and pain in her neck and shoulder emerged. In a way, we go backwards when we heal. We go from the newest to the oldest. This is a one of the Directions of Cure that Constantin Herring wrote about.

I give this example of this woman to show you that very often more than one homeopathic remedy is needed over the course of treatment. Healing is a process. There might not be one homeopathic remedy that is the end all for someone, but several homeopathic remedies may be needed that help move the person towards health. Each homeopathic remedy being a major part of the person’s healing. That is  why, it is a course of treatment, and happening over a period of time.

I would be happy to talk with you about a course of treatment for you. I can be reached through this blog and through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com.

Finding Out About The Person – The Homeopathic Consultation (Part 1)

I receive phone calls, emails, and messages from people asking me if homeopathy could help their particular health concern. Very often, I am asked, I have this _______ or I experience this symptom, what would you suggest for me?

I don’t know. And I say that. I say I don’t know. Then I say, I need to find out how this is for you. I need to know more. I suggest you come in for an appointment and lets see what is going on with you.

What Happens In A Homeopathic Consultation

When I meet someone for a homeopathic consultation, this is what is happening. I am:

  • Listening. Observing. Witnessing. So I can understand what the person is experiencing. Finding out what is bothering them, and how they experience it. What this is like for them.
  • Creating a place and space for someone to talk and to show who they are and what bothers them.
  • Listening to the spoken and the unspoken words. I often say, I am listening through.sculpture-2275202_1280
  • Watching, seeing, hearing, the hand gestures, body movements, facial expressions, sounds the person makes, and the words and language the person uses to express themselves.
  • Specifically, finding out about a symptom – what makes it better, worse, location, how experienced, when it first started, how it feels, other symptoms with it, how is it to have the symptom.
  • Putting all the pieces/parts together, making a whole picture of the person. Like a jigsaw puzzle, being put together. Or a painting being painted in front of me. But I don’t have the complete picture in front of me to know what the final outcome will be.
  • Learning the person’s world and their language. How they view their world. How they experience their world.
  • Giving a homeopathic remedy that is similar to this whole picture of the person.

Always Finding Out About The Person

What I describe here, is what I do whether the person has:

  • a chronic condition – ongoing, experiencing flare ups of symptoms periodically, never quite going away, such as eczema, menstrual difficulty, digestive issues, asthma, anxiety, auto-immune conditions and more.
  • an acute condition – the flu, a cold, an infection, a cough, a childhood disease. An acute could also be a flare up of the chronic condition.
  • a first aid situation – a fall, a trauma, dental work, surgery, a sprain/strain, a burn.

The length of time I spend with a person during a consultation may vary depending on whether it is a chronic, an acute, or a first aid situation. But always, always, I am finding out about the person – the what, and the how of what bothers them.

Look for Part 2 to this topic – the homeopathic consultation – in my next post.

If I can be of help in regard to a chronic, an acute or a first situation, I invite you to contact me here on this blog or through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com. I would be happy to talk with you, and to find out what is bothering you.

Healing: Quieting Down, Seeing More Possibilities, Feeling Better

Healing.

Feeling better. Feeling well. Feeling hopeful. Feeling positive. Feeling symptoms less or not at all. Feeling no pain. Feeling a sense of freedom. Feeling that you have choices. Feeling unstuck. Feeling you can move. Feeling that there are possibilities.

What I Often Say To Patients

People come to see me for all sorts of concerns that are bothering them. It can be a physical concern, a physical condition, an emotional reaction and response, difficulty focusing, just not feeling well and more. As a homeopath, I am always looking at the whole person. All the parts of the person make up the whole. As someone heals, the specific concern that brought them to homeopathy is better, along with a healing of the whole person.

Often, at a point towards the end of the consultation appointment, I talk a little bit about what happens as someone is healing. These are some of the analogies I have said.

The first one: it is as if an energy has attached itself to you. It is not your energy, but an outside one. And it is so loud. And so loud all the time. That no matter what you do, there quieting-boardwalkis this loudness, and it takes over everything. With a healing, this loudness starts to quiet down; quieting down till there may not be any loudness at all. At first, you may not notice that there is a change, but as the healing continues, the change, the lack of loudness becomes more noticeable. And it becomes quieter.

As I am saying this to the patient, I am using my arms, to show the quieting down. I start with my arms open armswide apart, and then move them closer together, slowly. This is what happens as you heal, I say, at first, you don’t notice that much difference between here and here (I show with my arms as I am moving them a little bit closer together), but as my arms get closer together, you notice more of change, a quieting down. You are not experiencing what bothers you as much, and you start to see, wow there has been a change, I am feeling better.

Another analogy: it is as if everything is the color orange. No matter what happens, no matter how you feel, no matter where you look, everything is orange. You don’t see any other colors. As you heal, you start to see that there are other colors, in addition to orange. colorsThere are blues, reds, pinks, yellows, purples, violets, greens and more. Now, there are more colors; there are more possibilities.

And a third analogy: it is as if we see only from one view point. No matter what happens in our life, no matter how we feel, physically, emotionally, mentally, we only see in one way. As you heal, there are other ways of looking at something. It is as if you have moved and shifted, and now you can see from another vantage point. You are no longer stuck, looking at something from one place, from one angle, from one point of view, you now see many possibilities.

Healing Is A Process

Healing is a process. I tell these three analogies to my patients, so that they see that their healing is a process. At first, they may see small changes, but as the healing continues, they see more changes, and are feeling better. What bothered them which brought them in for homeopathic treatment is better, AND they are feeling better in themselves.

Grieving – Experiencing A Loss

Grieving. Experiencing a loss.

We all grieve in are own way, and in our own pace, in our own time, short or long. Always, we need to respect and honor ourselves in how we go through experiencing grief. Honor where we are; how we grieve; how we feel, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually; how we take care of ourselves during this time; and how we reach out to others for help, if and when we need it.

Losses

We grieve over a loss. And a loss can be experienced in many different ways. Such as:

  • A death – parent, baby, child, relative, friend, pet
  • A loss of a job – firing, resigning, downsizing, restructuring
  • A move – changing one’s place of residency, a friend moving away, moving to another country, loss of a house/home
  • A grown child moving out, or going to college/another city for work/enlisting in the military
  • A divorce, separation, or a relationship ending
  • A situation, event or even how you respond to something that is different than you thought or wanted it to be
  • A change in the political climate
  • A loss of income
  • An illness – of oneself or a loved one
  • A war
  • A natural disaster – a friend years ago lost her house in a fire

A Woman

Years ago, a woman came to me for homeopathy because she was having bouts of drawing- pigletdiarrhea in the morning. She was also feeling very anxious about herself, her job, and her health. Her husband had died a few years earlier. Their marriage had not been so good at the time of his death. She mentioned that there had been times that she had wished he had had an accident and would die, and then he did die. She was feeling guilty about having had those thoughts about him. She also had experienced other losses in her life: family members who were ill or had died, an abortion, and that she would not have another child.

Along with feeling guilty about her feelings towards her husband, she had other persistent thoughts and feelings. She wondered what people thought of her, and was worried about making a mistake. She attended a women’s support group, and went for other help, but felt that it basically came down to her, to do the work to heal. There was a sense of aloneness about her, and she had difficulty receiving consolation from others.

I gave her the homeopathic remedy Natrum muriaticum. This homeopathic remedy is often used for people who are grieving. Grief was part of why I gave her this remedy, but the remedy also fit the wholeness of her.

I was in touch with her for several months after she took the homeopathic remedy. She was feeling better: the anxiety was better; the diarrhea was better; and she was looking at her feelings regarding her husband in a much more self nurturing way. Not only was she grieving her husband’s death, but also the life she had thought she would have. During our time together, she remarked that just having this space where she could talk and experience what she was feeling deep within, was very helpful.

Not Straight Forward

The process of grieving is not usually straight forward. We may lose someone, something, an opportunity, a way of life that we thought we would have, and many different feelings and responses may occur from this loss. We may experience physical complaints along with the emotions of grief. I think often, when we lose someone we start to look at that relationship, as this woman did, and feelings come up about it, such as guilt, shoulds, responsibility, sadness, blame, anger, fear, happiness and joy.

We may need some help in the process of grieving. We may see a homeopath, a counselor/therapist, a rabbi/minister, a massage therapist, an energy medicine practitioner, an acupuncturist, other healing practitioners, or a good friend. We find our way, taking time for ourselves, doing activities that we enjoy, and being patient with ourselves. We are healing.

Healing The Soil That Nourishes You

I hear so often that someone is experiencing a certain health concern. At that time, it is a flare up. The person may experience flare ups fairly often. They may feel alright between the flare ups, but the flare ups continue to occur.

Three People

Within the last few weeks, I have heard about, and spoken to several people who have been experiencing flare ups of their health concern. They are:

  • A woman who has shingles. This is not her first time having shingles. This time it has lasted more than the usual 7 weeks. She is in a lot of discomfort and pain.
  • A one year old boy who has ongoing earaches. His doctor may be considering putting tubes in his ears. His mother tells me that the boy is fussy all the time, just not a happy baby. He has a sensitive nature, she says, and sensitive to foods that he eats, and to the foods that she eats. He is being breastfed, which is very good thing. When I look at him, I see red around his eyes, and he just doesn’t smile very much.
  • A man who experiences ongoing digestive issues, whether having diarrhea very often, or just not feeling well after eating certain foods. He may have been diagnosed with, or given the label of, colitis or irritable bowel syndrome.

I am sure these three people are receiving health care, especially when they are having a flare up and are not feeling well. To me as a homeopath, when someone is experiencing flare ups often, it means that the root cause of what is bothering the person has not been healed.

Nourishing Soil

I think of soil. When we garden, we want good, nourishing, life giving and sustaining soil in soilwhich our vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, berries, fruits, and anything else we plant can grow. Why wouldn’t we want that kind of soil for ourselves?

The soil of these three people is not well, not nourishing, not life giving to them. We can give medicines to help relieve and alleviate their symptoms, but most of the time, these medicines are not healing the person; the medicines may be easing the symptoms, for a time period, but not healing.

flowers-113503_1280Homeopathy heals at the root cause of what is bothering someone. It is healing the soil of the person. When the soil is healthier, the person experiences less flare ups of their health concern, to possibly no flare ups. The person can bloom and flourish.

Homeopathy To Heal

When I meet with a patient, I observe them, listening to their language, and how they express themselves. With a child, I ask the mother and father to tell and to actually show me how the child responds and behaves to what is happening to them. What is the expression of the child? How do they move? What sounds do they make? For any age of the patient, it is always finding out about the individual person.

I would also want to know:

  • What would they say is bothering them the most?
  • How do they experience what bothers them?
  • What was happening before they started to have this health concern – shingles, ear infection, or colitis.
  • What happens right before the flare ups?
  • How do they experience the shingles, ear infection or colitis – what makes it better or worse?
  • For the child, what was the mother’s pregnancy like? How was the birth like?
  • Temperament?
  • Fears?
  • Other issues and sensitivities?

What Is Your Soil Like?

What is the soil like in your garden? Do you, or a loved one, experience an ongoing health issue with flare ups, such as ear infections, digestive issues, shingles, herpes, headaches, eczema or other skin eruptions, menstrual issues, chronic pain, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, or any other health concern?

Let’s talk and see how homeopathy would be a good fit for you. You can contact me here on this blog or through my website www.homeopathytoheal.com.
