Are You Experiencing Lingering Effects From A Trauma?

I have written  about traumas before, and have talked about the use of the homeopathic remedy Arnica Montana in many of my posts when there has been a trauma.

Recently, when I was with a friend, we were talking about traumas, physical and emotional ones. And that often there can be lingering effects from the trauma, such as a person having chronic pain, flare up of certain symptoms, feeling emotionally  distressed, regressing in behaviors and development, and more.

Traumas

A trauma can be physical and emotional. Some physical traumas can be from surgeries, giving birth, falls, vaccine reactions, accidents, and experiencing a down and outnatural disaster. Some emotional traumas could be the loss of a loved one through death, an illness, or a divorce; the experience of war; the experience of abuse, emotionally and physically; the experience of loss of a job or home; being in a natural disaster; and exposure to toxins in the air, water, soil, or environment.

(I have natural disasters in both categories. We are seeing more of them occurring.)

The person may have sought out help at the time of the trauma or soon afterwards,  and may have also used homeopathy.  The trauma may have been looked at as a first aid situation, looking at taking care of what has happening at that present time. And the help that the person received was beneficial to them. Yet, for some people there may be a lingering from the trauma, showing up in physical symptoms, emotional states of anxiety, fear, sadness or depression, or a feeling of just not being well.  The person may even say, I have not been well since “this” happened.

When I meet with a patient, I often ask what was going on when this (the symptoms or state of not being well) started.  In a way, I am looking for a cause. A cause in the sense that this may be the initiator, the start, to why they are not feeling well.

In My Practice

These are some of the traumas, and lingering states I have seen in my practice:

  • a woman who had two c-sections. A lot of scar tissue developed, and she experienced a lot of pain and discomfort during her menstrual cycle.
  • a concussion from a car accident. The woman experienced vertigo and difficulty focusing and the use of computers was very difficult for her.
  • a woman who was exposed to toxins after being in an area where there had been fires.
  • a boy who had reactions to vaccines.
  • a woman who lost her her husband, and was deeply grieving.
  • a man who hasn’t been well since having the flu.

Healing

In a lot of circumstances, healing takes time. We don’t always want to hear that it takes time. We want to feel better right now.  We don’t like to not feel well.

When we experience a trauma, it may affect us on many levels, and it may also bring up states and feelings we had experienced in the past. We may use different healing modalities to help us, such as homeopathy, message, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, energy body work, therapy, chiropractic, western medicine and more. The healing is a process, and in some ways it can be a deep learning experience about ourselves.

Never Well Since…….., Homeopathy Heals

Recently, I spoke to a woman who has been constantly tired. She said that this all started after she had a very bad fall. She hasn’t been well since, she said.

Many times, people may not be well after they have had some kind of physical trauma or emotional loss or upset. Specifically, physical traumas are anything that has happened to the body, or changes to the body, such as: a surgery, a fall, a high fever, a course(s) of antibiotics, an infection,  a pregnancy, a miscarriage, the flu, vaccinations, puberty, and menopause.  An emotional trauma could be a loss of a loved one, a big disappointment, a divorce, a geographical move, a loss of a job, mistreatment, a war experience, and sexual abuse.  There may be other types of traumas that I have not mentioned.

Never well since means that the person has not been well since that particular trauma occurred. The person may have dealt with the trauma, and that was no longer an issue or concern, but they may have developed a particular physical, emotional or mental symptom or a health condition after this.  Now this is their main concern, and they are not feeling well.

Some of these health concerns could be: prolonged headaches, digestive issues, autoimmune diseases, depression, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, women’s issues, men’s issues, difficulty breathing, skin eruptions, eczema, hair loss, chronic fatigue, insomnia or other sleep disturbances, nightmares, phobias, fears, post traumatic syndrome, just not feeling well, and more.

don't feel well

The person may have seen doctors or other health professionals for help, such as the woman who called me, yet they are still not feeling well. This is a good time to come to homeopathy.

Homeopathy looks at the whole person, knowing that all the parts of the person are interconnected. This includes the prolonged response to the trauma that the person is experiencing – the never well since. Through the understanding of what the person is experiencing in their health concern, the homeopathic practitioner (homeopath) selects a homeopathic remedy that is similar to their suffering.  The main principle of homeopathy is the Law or Similars or Like Cures Like. Each person is unique in how they experience their symptoms and health concerns. The given homeopathic remedy stimulates the person’s own healing process, and the person starts to feel better.

Homeopathy is gentle in its healing and there are no side effects. It heals at the root of what is bothering the person. The person then is feeling better, and the never been well since is also healed.

Arnica Montana – a Homeopathic Remedy for Trauma

The homeopathic remedy Arnica Montana is often people’s first introduction to homeopathy.  Many mothers use it for their children. Athletes may use it. And I have heard that cosmetic surgeons and dentists often recommend Arnica Montana after there has been a surgical procedure. (You may want to look at my post on recovery after a Caesarian section.)

Arnica Montana is a wonderful homeopathic remedy for any kind of trauma situation that occurs to the body.  Traumas can be falls, surgeries, accidents, and blows. There is a feeling of soreness and bruising. Often the person may say, “I am fine”. There can be swelling and puffiness. The formation of ecchymosis may occur – black and blue areas. Ecchymosis is a bruise, contusion or a dark area on the skin, made by blood which has escaped into the tissues after a blow.  This is really the body’s way of healing itself when there has been trauma. Arnica Montana helps in the reduction of these symptoms, and eases the feeling of soreness, pain and bruising.

The homeopathic remedy Arnica Montana is made from the Arnica Montana plant that grows on mountains in high altitude areas.  The two small vials shown here are what you may find in the store.

Here are a couple of examples when Arnica Montana was used:

  • A patient of mine used it after having a procedure to remove a skin growth on her nose.  The area was sore, slightly puffy and the checks started to get a yellowish tinge to them. She was using Tylenol to help with the pain. But after starting to use Arnica Montana, she noticed that the soreness was less, the swelling and puffiness was going down, and the yellowish area was fading.
  • Another patient used Arnica Montana after having teeth fillings replaced. She was feeling a deep soreness in her teeth, gums and jaw as the result of having experienced a lot of drilling. Arnica Montana relieved the pain completely. She used the remedy several times a day for several days and/or when needed.

Often people use this remedy in a self help and first aid situation. It is always good though, to see a practitioner of homeopathy if there are serious or longer lasting symptoms  that you are experiencing.

Homeopathy: Supporting a Woman Through a Caesarian Birth and Recovery

I wrote this article for the January 2013 issue of Natural Baby Pros, an online magazine. This issue was focusing on Caesarian sections. Their link is http://www.naturalbabypros.com

The article link is https://www.naturalbabypros.com/learn/140-article-library/912-homeopathy-supporting-a-woman-through-a-caesarian-birth-and-recovery

——————————————————————————————————————-

There are many scenarios resulting in a Caesarian section. Some are planned due to choice or a physical concern.  And some are the result of an emergency situation and not planned. In any scenario, the woman still goes through trauma and a healing process afterwards. Healing always takes time. Homeopathy can help with the trauma and the healing that is experienced with a Caesarian section.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that was developed by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700’s. During the mid 1800’s to the early 1900’s, homeopathy was widely used in the United States, and is presently experiencing a resurgence in the United States. In addition, homeopathy is extensively practiced in England, Europe, South America, India and other parts of the world.

Homeopathy looks at each person as unique. How a woman experiences having a Caesarian section is unique to her. For example, one woman may find that it is the physical symptoms that bother her the most, such as feeling sore and bruised; tired and fatigued; concern about scarring; or breastfeeding issues. Another woman may experience the trauma more on an emotional level, feeling angry, disappointed, or let down that the birth was not as she had planned.  Again, this is showing how individual and unique we all are.

The homeopathic practitioner or homeopath takes the time to listen and to observe what it is that bothers the woman, and what it is like for her. This could be the type of pain; how often the pain is; her emotional responses to what has happened and is happening; dreams; fears and more. All of this information guides the homeopath in selecting a homeopathic remedy that is most similar to what it is that the woman is experiencing. Simply, it is matching the state of the woman to a  homeopathic remedy. This is the main principle of homeoapthy – The Law of Similars or Like Cures Like. The given homeopathic remedy stimulates the woman’s own healing process.

Here are some of the concerns that a woman may be experiencing after having a Caesarian section:

  • Scarring
  • Pains and discomfort from the surgery
  • Pains and discomfort from labor, if the mother also experienced labor
  • Emotional state – fear, anger, let down, disappointment, weepy, depression
  • Exhaustion/fatigue
  • Bleeding
  • Breastfeeding issues
  • The health of the baby

There are homeopathic remedies that are very useful in first aid situations, Caesarian section included. Below is a list of some of them. It is safe to use homeopathic remedies while nursing. Only use one remedy at a time. Sometimes, the state of the woman may change and another  remedy will be needed as the healing progresses.

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

State of mother:

  • Staphysagria – mother feels resentful, angry and let down. May feel as if she had been assaulted.
  • Pulsatilla – weepy, clingy, wanting to be with others. After pains from delivery.
  • Aconite – shock and fear. Feel that she will die.

Trauma from the surgery.  Injured feeling. Aches, pains, bruising, swelling, contusions and inflammations:

  • Arnica Montana – very useful remedy for any kind of trauma and injury.
  • Bellis Perennis – usually used for injuries on the trunk of the body or if Arnica did not help.

Pains in the sacrum or coccyx after an epidural has been given or when forceps were used:

  • Hypericum – remedy that helps in areas that are rich with nerves, such as the fingertips, toes and tailbone (coccyx), tongue, teeth, eyes, and genitalia.

Severe pains in the tissues that have been torn or cut during delivery or from episiotomies or Caesarian section. helpful for the healing of the Caesarian scar:

  • Staphysagria – helps in post-surgical pain (see above).
  • Calendula – helps with healing of cuts, wounds, scratches, abrasions, incisions and scrapes. It works as an antiseptic and prevents serious infection. Also in a cream used topically for wounds, incisions, etc.
  • Hypericum – helps in injuries, such as contusions, lacerations, punctures in areas that are rich in nerves.

If received general anesthesia:

  • Phosphorous – having prolonged symptoms of nausea, sleepiness, and/or just out of it after having come out of the anesthesia.

Breastfeeding:

  • Belladonna – breasts are engorged. throbbing pains, red streaks, breasts feel hot. There may be a fever.
  • Byronia – engorged breasts. stitching pains. Breasts are pale and hard. Worse from an kind of movement. Very irritable.
  • Castor equi – nipples are sore and cracked.
  • China – anemic. Exhaustion from breastfeeding.
  • Phytolacca – nipples are cracked. Milk ducts are blocked. Lumpy breast. Abscess/mastitis.

Strained muscles, tendons or joints.

  • Rhus tox – sore when first starting to move, but once moving feels better
  • Ruta grav – good for muscle and tendon strains.

It is always important to see a trained homeopath if any health concern or condition continues. If may also be beneficial to see a homeopath before a woman gets pregnant or during her pregnancy. Sometimes, the underlying health state that a woman experiences before getting pregnant may affect how the pregnancy proceeds and what happens during the delivery, perhaps resulting in an emergency Caesarian section. Homeopathy is very helpful in these kinds of situations. Homeopathy is treating the whole person, and when the woman is in a more healthy state, the possibility of the baby, the pregnancy, and the delivery being healthier and going smoothly increases.
