The Homeopathic Appointment

I receive phone calls, emails, and messages from people asking me if homeopathy can help them or a family member with a particular health issue. They ask, I have this _______ or I experience this symptom _______________. What would you suggest for me?

My answer is: I need to know more. I need to know how it is for you. Someone else may be experiencing the same symptoms or have the same diagnosis, and most likely each of you would need a different homeopathic remedy that fits you. I suggest you come in for an appointment and lets see how it is for you.

What Happens In A Homeopathic Appointment

At the homeopathic appointment, I am:

  • Finding out about how the person experiences what bothers them, (what brought them in for homeopathic care) through listening, observing and witnessing. What makes it better, worse, the location, type of pain, when it started and more.
  • Creating a place and space for someone to talk and to show who they are and what bothers them, through words, gestures, expressions.
  • Hearing about other symptoms – physical, emotional and mental.
  • Asking about dreams, fears, interests. Hearing about their emotional life – relationships, events that happened in their life. How they responded to them.
  • Hearing about theirs and their family’s medical history
  • Following what the person is saying and asking: tell me more, what is the sensation felt in your body, what is the experience of that, how does if feel. I am being where the patient is and following what they are saying.
  • puzzle-colorful piecesPutting all the pieces/parts together, making a whole picture of the person. It is like a jigsaw puzzle, being put together. Or a painting being painted in front of me. I don’t have the complete picture in front of me to know or guide me to what the final picture will be.
  • If the patient is a baby, a young child, or non verbal, I observe them, and the parent or main care giver gives me their observations and knowledge of the person. Homeopathy also is very helpful for animals.
  • Giving a homeopathic remedy that is similar to this totality of the whole picture of the person.

The patient is:

  • Telling, showing and sharing with me what bothers them. How they experience it. Why it is a problem for them.

Always Finding Out About The Person

The length of time I spend with a person during a consultation may vary depending on whether it is a chronic, an acute, or a first aid situation. Always, always, I am finding out about the person. Homeopathy is treating the person, not the name or label of what the person is experiencing. The name and label are part of the totality of the person.

Homeopathy is helpful for chronic, acute and first aid issues.

  • A chronic condition is an ongoing health issue, in which someone experiences flare ups of symptoms periodically. It never quite goes away. A chronic issue is eczema, menstrual difficulties, menopause, digestive issues, asthma, anxiety, auto-immune conditions, depression, allergies, warts, fevers that come and go, headaches, earaches, swollen glands, urinary tract infections, extreme sound sensitivity, stomachaches, fears/phobias, not feeling well and told there is nothing wrong with them, and more.
  • An acute condition is the flu, a cold, an infection, a cough, a stomachache, a fever, a childhood disease. An acute usually does not last long and the person feels better. An acute could also be a flare up or an exasperation of the chronic condition.
  • A first aid situation is a fall, a trauma, an accident, dental work, surgery, a sprain/strain, a burn, cut or wound and insect bites.

For an acute or first aid issue, the appointments are shorter than for a chronic issue. The appointments may not go into as much detail as for a chronic health issue.

Some of my patients who have seen me for a chronic health issue, will contact me if they are experiencing an acute issue or a first aid issue. Homeopathy has become part of their health care.

Feeling Injured – And Another Class On First Aid And Homeopathy

I am happy to be offering another class on the use of homeopathic remedies for first aid situations, such as with falls, burns, insect bites and sprains on July 13th at Lifelong Yoga.  In this post and in the class, I am going to talk a bit about injuries that may have occurred in the past, how they can affect one’s health, and how homeopathy can be helpful in their healing.

The information for the class is below. (If you are not local to the San Diego area, and are interested in a class on the use of homeopathic remedies for first aid, we could schedule on online/virtual class.  Contact me if you are interested. )

First Aid

When we have a first aid situation we look for relief and help in the healing.  We may go to our physician, our chiropractor, our acupuncturist, our homeopath, our massage therapist or other healing practitioners we see.  We get the help we need at the time of the injury/trauma.

Yesterday, a long time patient of mine, called because she was having severe pain in her broken heartright buttocks area. She had been doing a lot of physical work, cleaning out her house, and recently a close friend of hers had passed away. This loss brought back feelings of grief and sadness that she had after losing her mother and her husband years ago. She had seen her acupuncturist, and now was calling her homeopath.  She was experiencing physical symptoms, thinking that she had over done things, and there was an emotional component, the loss.  Homeopathy was addressing both of these – the physical and the emotional.

Another Patient

Sometimes, there may be lingering effects from the trauma we experienced, even though we may have gotten help at that time. Or, we may have not known that there was a trauma when something happened.

For example, a patient of mine had pain in her abdominal area. It wasn’t menstrual pains or cramping, although it did occur right before her period. She had it checked out by her physician, had some tests done, such as a colonoscopy, and nothing was found to be the cause of what she was experiencing.

When she came to see me, and was telling me about her situation,  she mentioned that she had had two cesarean sections, and that there had been a lot of scar tissue developed from both of the  c- sections. This was a trauma, and could be thought of as a first aid situation, at the time. The given homeopathic remedy (Bellis perennis) helped her tremendously with the pains she experienced – the pains became less and eventually not at all. This was an example of an injury, a first aid situation that had happened, and the lingering effects from it.

Learning About The Patient

When I meet with a patient, I often ask what was going on at the time when these symptoms started. This could be an event or situation in their life, a trauma of some kind, such as a fall, surgery, an emotional loss, or a job loss, for example.  globuli-3163133_960_720Whatever it is, can often be the start or the onset to what is bothering the person, and which brought them in for homeopathy. And in a way, this trauma is a first aid situation at the time, and from it a more chronic type of condition has developed.

The following types of traumas and injuries may also be considered in the category of first aid. Homeopathy can be helpful to them, if it is something that happened recently, months, or even years ago.

  • emotional trauma – loss of a loved one, a job, a home, war experience
  • surgeries, procedures and dental work
  • falls, concussions, head injuries, car accidents, sports injuries
  • giving birth and the delivery – not well since for the mother, and the behaviors of the baby
  • food poisoning
  • exposure to toxins
  • drug and vaccine reactions

First Aid Class – Using Homeopathic Remedies To Help In The Healing

In my last blog post, I wrote about what my niche is: chronic, ongoing health homeopathy first aidconcerns. Homeopathy is wonderful for chronic conditions. Homeopathy is also wonderful for acute and first aid concerns.

Over the past years, I have written blogs, talking about specific homeopathic remedies that are useful for sprains, traumas, burns, during a natural disaster, and when having dental work.

In February, I am offering a class in the San Diego area on some of the homeopathic remedies I wrote about, and to also talk a little bit about homeopathy.  You are welcome to come if you are in the San Diego area. If you are not local, and are interested in having a class on first aid in your area, we could plan an online course via Skype, Facetime or Whatsapp.

Here is the flyer for the class on First Aid I am giving on Saturday, February 9th at Lifelong Yoga. If you know of someone who may be interested in the class, I would appreciate you passing this information on to them. Thank you.

The Healing Process – The Homeopathic Consultation (Part 2)

I want to continue talking about the homeopathic consultation. As I wrote in Part 1, it is always finding out about the person, and then giving them the homeopathic remedy that is similar to what they are experiencing. In this post, I want to talk about the healing process, the course of treatment.

The Course Of Treatment

Quite often over the course of treatment, more than one homeopathic remedy will be needed. The treatment starts with one homeopathic remedy, which is similar to what the person is experiencing. Follow up appointments let us see how the person is moving through their treatment. This first homeopathic remedy may be used for awhile. Or, after a period of time, 15 days, a month, several months time, another homeopathic remedy may be needed. As the person is moving and healing other rock-layers-3578_1280symptoms, older symptoms and states emerge. A different homeopathic remedy will be needed at this time. In a way, it is like one layer is exposed, and heals, and other layers emerge, going deeper to the core of the person. It is a process of healing.

A Patient

I want to tell you about a patient I have worked with for the past 18 months. I gave her several homeopathic remedies over this period of time. She initially came to see me because she had been in an accident. She suffered a head and brain injury. She was going for western medical treatment, and was doing well with it. She also wanted homeopathy to be part of her care. Her injury situation was more than a first aid situation. My job was to find out about her – what was bothering her and how she was experiencing it.

The first homeopathic remedy helped her a lot. She was feeling better, and was able to do more of the activities that she had found difficult to do after the accident. She was able to use technological devices better; focus and stay on task longer without feeling discomfort; and was experiencing less discomfort, brain fog and dizziness. And she continued to keep improving.

During this period of time, she was starting to go through menopause. The homeopathic remedy helped her through this as well, although the menstrual and menopausal symptoms were not the reason why she had come in for homeopathic treatment. To me, this shows how homeopathy is truly a holistic medicine, and addressing the whole person.

About 9 months into her treatment, at one of the follow up appointments, what she was saying that bothered her was completely different from what had bothered her before. Now, she was feeling very out of control, and that it was easy to be controlled by external things and other people. She described it as if she was being sucked dry, penetrated, and engulfed. She expressed this in a very emotional way, and said this is something she has experienced before in some of her relationships. This was a new picture of her, a new layer. I gave her a different homeopathic remedy. She did well with it.

About 6 months after that, again she was talking differently. What was bothering her now was her neck and shoulders. This was something she has experienced off and on most of her life, although, after having been in the accident, the neck discomfort was not upper most for her. In fact, she didn’t bring it up until later on, until she was doing better from the accident. I gave her another homeopathic remedy that addressed this new layer.

How Healing Occurs

This patient is a good example of how healing occurs, showing that there are different layers to a person. What was bothering her the most after the accident was the difficulties she was having from the head and brain injury – functioning, discomfort, and pain.  As this was doing better, another layer emerged. This layer sand-spiralhad an emotional feeling of being engulfed. As this was doing better, the discomfort and pain in her neck and shoulder emerged. In a way, we go backwards when we heal. We go from the newest to the oldest. This is a one of the Directions of Cure that Constantin Herring wrote about.

I give this example of this woman to show you that very often more than one homeopathic remedy is needed over the course of treatment. Healing is a process. There might not be one homeopathic remedy that is the end all for someone, but several homeopathic remedies may be needed that help move the person towards health. Each homeopathic remedy being a major part of the person’s healing. That is  why, it is a course of treatment, and happening over a period of time.

Finding Out About The Person – The Homeopathic Consultation (Part 1)

I receive phone calls, emails, and messages from people asking me if homeopathy could help their particular health concern. Very often, I am asked, I have this _______ or I experience this symptom, what would you suggest for me?

I don’t know. And I say that. I say I don’t know. Then I say, I need to find out how this is for you. I need to know more. I suggest you come in for an appointment and lets see what is going on with you.

What Happens In A Homeopathic Consultation

When I meet someone for a homeopathic consultation, this is what is happening. I am:

  • Listening. Observing. Witnessing. So I can understand what the person is experiencing. Finding out what is bothering them, and how they experience it. What this is like for them.
  • Creating a place and space for someone to talk and to show who they are and what bothers them.
  • Listening to the spoken and the unspoken words. I often say, I am listening through.sculpture-2275202_1280
  • Watching, seeing, hearing, the hand gestures, body movements, facial expressions, sounds the person makes, and the words and language the person uses to express themselves.
  • Specifically, finding out about a symptom – what makes it better, worse, location, how experienced, when it first started, how it feels, other symptoms with it, how is it to have the symptom.
  • Putting all the pieces/parts together, making a whole picture of the person. Like a jigsaw puzzle, being put together. Or a painting being painted in front of me. But I don’t have the complete picture in front of me to know what the final outcome will be.
  • Learning the person’s world and their language. How they view their world. How they experience their world.
  • Giving a homeopathic remedy that is similar to this whole picture of the person.

Always Finding Out About The Person

What I describe here, is what I do whether the person has:

  • a chronic condition – ongoing, experiencing flare ups of symptoms periodically, never quite going away, such as eczema, menstrual difficulty, digestive issues, asthma, anxiety, auto-immune conditions and more.
  • an acute condition – the flu, a cold, an infection, a cough, a childhood disease. An acute could also be a flare up of the chronic condition.
  • a first aid situation – a fall, a trauma, dental work, surgery, a sprain/strain, a burn.

The length of time I spend with a person during a consultation may vary depending on whether it is a chronic, an acute, or a first aid situation. But always, always, I am finding out about the person – the what, and the how of what bothers them.

Look for Part 2 to this topic – the homeopathic consultation – in my next post.

Letting Others Know About Homeopathy

I like to talk to people about homeopathy, and how it can be helpful for them. This can be for first aid care, acute illnesses like flus and colds, and for chronic conditions.

Talking To A Woman At A Health Food Store

The other day when I was in a health food store, I saw a woman standing by the section of the homeopathic remedies. I said to her, 150 - boiron arnica I am a homeopath. What remedies do you have in your hand, and why? She said the other day she had dropped something heavy on her left foot, and had been using Arnica montana cream to help with the bruising pain. (Arnica montana is very helpful in first aid situations when there is a feeling of bruising and soreness.) She has used the Arnica montana cream for past injuries. and it has helped. Her holistic health practitioner had suggested taking Arnica montana orally, meaning taking the pellets. I agreed that it is better to take the homeopathic remedy orally than topically, and the 30C potency would be better to use than the 6C potency.

She asked what is the difference between the two potencies. I explained that when making the homeopathic remedy the 30C goes through the potentization process 30 times, which means it has been diluted and successed (shaken), diluted, successed 30 times. The 6C potency goes through that process 6 times. In the 6C potency, there still remains some of the physical substance that this homeopathic remedy is made from. The 12C potency is the first potency in which there is no longer any physical substance of the remedy. It is the energetic pattern of the substance it is made from.

I then asked her what the other remedy was that she was holding. Thuja occidentalis. I have warts, she said.  Warts was what was written on the vial. Yes, Thuja occidentalis is helpful for warts, but you really want to look at the whole picture of you, and not just the part, meaning the warts. I said to her if Thuja occidentalis doesn’t help you, don’t give up on homeopathy, go see a homeopath.

I offered her my card.

Educating People On Homeopathy

I find that I talk to people quite often. It is getting homeopathy out to the public, to those people who are holistically health conscious, and to those who may not be feeling as well as they would like to be feeling. Here are a few things that I find myself often saying to people who I meet. They may be self treating, and don’t know how to take the remedy, nor how often to take it.

homeopathy2I may tell someone how to take the homeopathic remedy – tip 3 pellets into the lid of the vial, and then tip them into the mouth, letting them dissolve. Take them on a clean mouth – wait 30 minutes after eating, brushing your teeth, or drinking something before taking the homeopathic remedy, and then wait 30 minutes after taking the homeopathic remedy to eat, brush you teeth, or drink something.

I may tell someone how often to take the homeopathic remedy –  several doses over a couple of days. If feeling better. stop. The remedy is still working. You don’t need to finish the vial.

I may tell someone that if the pellets fall on the ground, throw away. Don’t put them back into the vail.

And I am often asked – I have this        health concern (fill in the blank, such as asthma, chronic fatigue, eczema, digestive issues, headaches, chronic ear infections, difficulty focusing, anxiety and others), what do you suggest? I say, I need to find out more of how this is for you. Let’s say two people come to see me, both have headaches. There are the general symptoms of the headaches, but each person experiences the headache differently and uniquely to them, and would need a homeopathic remedy that fits them. The remedy is for the person, who has a headache. The homeopathic remedy is not for the headache. So I would need to find out how it is for you.      .

Healing With Homeopathy

Self treating may be a way that someone first uses homeopathic remedies, specifically the use of Arnica montana. And it is a way that introduces people to homeopathy. Homeopathy is helpful for so many health concerns that people experience these days. Homeopathy looks at the individual person in how they experience what bothers them. A homeopathic remedy is used that is similar to the individual person, simulating their own healing process. And the person feels better.

What can I let you know about homeopathy?

How can I be of help to you?
