On Facebook, I came across this article from NPR on eczema. The article talks about how a lot of people these days are suffering with eczema, (atopic dermatitis) and not much has helped in really healing them. There is use of corticosteroid creams and other topical ointments, but there is no healing. After reading this article, I thought it would be helpful to address how homeopathy can be helpful for people who suffer with eczema.
Many people are suffering with eczema, babies through adults. Many moms call or mention to me that their child is experiencing eczema. Or they might say that eczema runs in their family, that they had it as a child, and now their child has it. A healing with homeopathy can break this tendency in the family towards eczema, so that the tendency or susceptibility towards eczema is not being passed to another generation.
Symptoms of Eczema
The symptoms of eczema are very uncomfortable. They are not life threatening, but very uncomfortable. Some of the symptoms are itching, painful areas of the skin, rawness, redness, scaling, oozing, crusting over, and bleeding from scratching so much. The eczema can be on any part of the body, and often it is on an area that is easily seen by others. The person suffering with the eczema wants to cover the eczema eruptions, hide it, so no one will see it, but cannot if it is on the face, hands, arms, feet or lower legs. The person is concerned with how others may perceive their skin, and wonder what will they think of them. (This can be true of any skin eruption – how others perceive it, and how other may react.)
What People Do To Help Themselves
People may do all sorts of things to help with the eczema – change their diets, eat gluten free foods, don’t eat dairy, wear natural fabrics, and use detergents and soaps that have more natural ingredients. We are exposed to more chemicals in our foods, environment and medicines than we used to be. These changes may all help, but it is not addressing the core of where the problem comes from.
Eczema Is Not A Skin Issue; It Is A Systemic Issue
Eczema is not a skin issue. Western medicine treats it as if it is only that. Eczema is a systemic issue, which is manifesting or showing up on the skin. Systemic means affecting the entire body. The eczema is not local to the skin. It manifests on the skin, but it is coming from a deeper disturbance, an imbalance, in the body.
The usual treatments of some kind of corticosteroid creams or ointments used topically may seem as though they are healing because the itchiness and the eczema are relieved. But this is usually only for a short time, and the eczema returns. If the eczema does goes away, other symptoms may develop such as breathing issues and asthma, or muscular type pains.
These kinds of treatment with corticosteroid creams are very suppressive. Suppressive means to keep from giving vent to. By using these ointments, the expression (the skin eruption of eczema) of the disturbance or imbalance has been closed off. There is no longer an outlet for the disturbance, and the disturbance needs to manifest somewhere. It therefore goes deeper into the body, and actually becomes more life threatening, such as having breathing difficulties. This is the reverse direction of Hering’s Direction of Cure.
Healing Eczema With Homeopathy
The healing needs to be of the whole person, at the core, at the disturbance, at the imbalance of where the symptoms are coming from. And the healing needs to fit the person, in how they are experiencing their eczema uniquely to them. How is the eczema for this person? By understanding through observation and listening to the patient talk about their eczema and other things about themselves, a homeopathic remedy is selected that fits them. It is a homeopathic remedy for the person, who has eczema, not a homeopathic remedy for the eczema. This homeopathic remedy stimulates the person’s own healing ability, and the eczema heals, as well as there is healing at the core, at the disturbance, at the imbalance. There is a healing of the whole person.
