This is a reposting of a blog I wrote in February 2015.
We have been hearing a lot again in the news about outbreaks of the measles. When I wrote the post, I felt it was important to give positive and constructive information if someone does become sick with the measles. I still feel that way. I have added a few other things to the post.
*******
I think it is important for parents to know that if their child, or themselves as an adult, become ill with measles, or any other childhood disease, homeopathy can help during these times. And, to know that homeopathy is helpful if someone has vaccinated their child and there are adverse reactions to the vaccines.
The body has a wonderful ability to heal itself. It is when the body gets stuck, that help may be needed, and this is when homeopathy will be useful. The homeopathic remedies are helping the body with its own healing abilities.
It is important to see your physician, and if you choose to use homeopathy, to see a practitioner of homeopathy, a homeopath, to help in this health situation. You don’t want to self treat.
Measles
Measles is one of several childhood diseases. It is important that the rash develops, and moves downward. That is an indication of healing – from the inside out, and from the top downward. To read more about direction of healing, read my blog post on direction of cure.
Symptoms of measles:
- Fever of 102 – 104 Fahrenheit
- Watery eyes – eyes inflamed
- Sensitivity to light
- Hard, dry cough
- Sore throat
- Seldom has an appetite
- Tongue may be coated
- Breath – sick smelling
- Rash may start in mouth on 2nd or 3 rd day. Tiny, white spots in inner lining of the mouth, called Koplik’s Spots.
- On 4th or 5th day, an itchy red, rash will appear. Large, flat blotches. They may run into each other. The rash starts on the face, moving downward. (This is a Direction of Cure.) Lasting 4 -7 days. Rash is a good sign.
- Fever may rise as rash moves down the body, and subside in a few days.
- Lasts around 10 days
- Most contagious, 2 – 4 days before rash appears. Still keep child isolated for 5 days after rash develops.
Observation To Help Come to a Homeopathic Remedy
It is best to observe the person: their physical state, emotional state, and mental state. It is matching what the person is experiencing to a homeopathic remedy that is similar. This is Like Cures Like or the Law of Similiars, the main principle of homeopathy.
Some areas to observe and note:
- Symptoms come on suddenly or gradually
- Which are the prominent symptoms? Fever, restlessness, fatigue, eye irritations, runny nose, rash
- Color of nasal discharge. Does it irritate the skin?
- Sensitivity to light. How do the eyes feel?
- Reaction to motion
- Limbs or facial muscles jerk or twitch
- Feel tired or heavy
- Cough or chest pains. What is the cough like?
- Headache. Location of pain. What is pain like?
- Rash – present or not, discomfort
- Thirst or no thirst.
- Digestive issues – nausea, diarrhea, constipation.
- Emotional state – irritability, wanting to be alone, wanting to be around others
- Desire of fresh air
Of course, it is important to get as much rest and sleep as one can, drink fluids, eat if one wants to or not. Being in a dark room may help if someone is very sensitive to the light. Vitamin C and A can be helpful as well.
Homeopathic Remedies
The ill person may start with one homeopathic remedy and then need to change to another, as they move through the illness. The homeopathic remedies are helping the body in its own healing abilities. One homeopathic remedy is used at a time.
Here is a short description of some of the remedies that are useful when someone has the measles.
Aconite – Restless. Eyes ache in the light. Eyes and nose are streaming. Hard, croupy cough. Useful in early days of measles, especially if it has come on suddenly. Has a fever. Fearful.
Apis – High fever. Skin swollen. Inflamed eyes and lips. Worse by heat. Thirstless. Irritable. may be delirious. Restless. Can’t stay still.
Belladonna – Useful in early stage, like Aconite. And can be useful after the rash has developed. Restless, red face and flushed,. Thirstless. Throbbing headache. Skin is damp from fever. May be delirious. Unable to sleep. Limbs may twitch and jerk. Has a sore throat. Bothered by noise, light and jarring.
Bryonia – When rash is slow or late to appear, or doesn’t develop fully. Taking Bryonia will bring out the rash. When chest is affected. Cough is dry and painful, and made worse by motion. Lies still, hurts to move. (Differentiating with Gelsenium, which is too tired to move.) Pale face, red eyes. Can have constipation and a frontal headache. Dry mouth. Thirst for large amounts of cold water between long intervals. Worse by any motion and warmth. Better by being still and with cold things.
Euphrasia – Nasal discharge and eye symptoms are dominate. Eyes are sensitive to light. Acrid tears streaming from red, swollen eyes, which irritates the checks. Profuse watery nasal discharge that does not irritate the nose nor the upper lip. (Different from Gelsenium). Harsh cough. may have a headache. Nasal and eye symptoms are better in the open air.
Gelsenium – Also helpful in early stages, and after rash has developed. Begins slowly. Lethargic, feels heavy. Doesn’t want to be disturbed, doesn’t want to move. Motionless, because they are too tired. Not very thirsty. Chilly, though feverish. Complaining of achiness. Harsh, croupy cough. Hoarseness. Watery nasal discharge that irritates the nose and upper lip (different from Euphrasia). When rash starts, it is very itchy.
Kali bichromicum – The rash appears on the 4th or 5 th day, and the fever usually lessens at that time. The cough is looser during the day. Laryngitis with a hoarse, brassy cough may develop. Feels a tickle at the base of the throat. The expectoration is long strings of a ropy, tough mucus, yellow in color. There may be an earache and nausea. Watery eyes. And eyelids stick together.
Pulsatilla – Useful in later stages of measles, when fever has subsided. Similar to Kali bichromicum, but milder. Nasal discharge is thick and yellowish. Profuse tearing from the eyes. Cough is dry at night, loose during the day. Symptoms worse at dusk. wants cool air, worse in heat. Little thirst. May have nausea with diarrhea. Earaches. Wants to be with other people. Wants sympathy. Changeable in moods. Likes the open air.
Rhus Tox – Intensely itchy rashes. Worse at night and during rest. Restlessness. Rash recedes or fails to appear.
