The Healing Process – The Homeopathic Consultation (Part 2)

I want to continue talking about the homeopathic consultation. As I wrote in Part 1, it is always finding out about the person, and then giving them the homeopathic remedy that is similar to what they are experiencing. In this post, I want to talk about the healing process, the course of treatment.

The Course Of Treatment

Quite often over the course of treatment, more than one homeopathic remedy will be needed. The treatment starts with one homeopathic remedy, which is similar to what the person is experiencing. Follow up appointments let us see how the person is moving through their treatment. This first homeopathic remedy may be used for awhile. Or, after a period of time, 15 days, a month, several months time, another homeopathic remedy may be needed. As the person is moving and healing other rock-layers-3578_1280symptoms, older symptoms and states emerge. A different homeopathic remedy will be needed at this time. In a way, it is like one layer is exposed, and heals, and other layers emerge, going deeper to the core of the person. It is a process of healing.

A Patient

I want to tell you about a patient I have worked with for the past 18 months. I gave her several homeopathic remedies over this period of time. She initially came to see me because she had been in an accident. She suffered a head and brain injury. She was going for western medical treatment, and was doing well with it. She also wanted homeopathy to be part of her care. Her injury situation was more than a first aid situation. My job was to find out about her – what was bothering her and how she was experiencing it.

The first homeopathic remedy helped her a lot. She was feeling better, and was able to do more of the activities that she had found difficult to do after the accident. She was able to use technological devices better; focus and stay on task longer without feeling discomfort; and was experiencing less discomfort, brain fog and dizziness. And she continued to keep improving.

During this period of time, she was starting to go through menopause. The homeopathic remedy helped her through this as well, although the menstrual and menopausal symptoms were not the reason why she had come in for homeopathic treatment. To me, this shows how homeopathy is truly a holistic medicine, and addressing the whole person.

About 9 months into her treatment, at one of the follow up appointments, what she was saying that bothered her was completely different from what had bothered her before. Now, she was feeling very out of control, and that it was easy to be controlled by external things and other people. She described it as if she was being sucked dry, penetrated, and engulfed. She expressed this in a very emotional way, and said this is something she has experienced before in some of her relationships. This was a new picture of her, a new layer. I gave her a different homeopathic remedy. She did well with it.

About 6 months after that, again she was talking differently. What was bothering her now was her neck and shoulders. This was something she has experienced off and on most of her life, although, after having been in the accident, the neck discomfort was not upper most for her. In fact, she didn’t bring it up until later on, until she was doing better from the accident. I gave her another homeopathic remedy that addressed this new layer.

How Healing Occurs

This patient is a good example of how healing occurs, showing that there are different layers to a person. What was bothering her the most after the accident was the difficulties she was having from the head and brain injury – functioning, discomfort, and pain.  As this was doing better, another layer emerged. This layer sand-spiralhad an emotional feeling of being engulfed. As this was doing better, the discomfort and pain in her neck and shoulder emerged. In a way, we go backwards when we heal. We go from the newest to the oldest. This is a one of the Directions of Cure that Constantin Herring wrote about.

I give this example of this woman to show you that very often more than one homeopathic remedy is needed over the course of treatment. Healing is a process. There might not be one homeopathic remedy that is the end all for someone, but several homeopathic remedies may be needed that help move the person towards health. Each homeopathic remedy being a major part of the person’s healing. That is  why, it is a course of treatment, and happening over a period of time.

Finding Out About The Person – The Homeopathic Consultation (Part 1)

I receive phone calls, emails, and messages from people asking me if homeopathy could help their particular health concern. Very often, I am asked, I have this _______ or I experience this symptom, what would you suggest for me?

I don’t know. And I say that. I say I don’t know. Then I say, I need to find out how this is for you. I need to know more. I suggest you come in for an appointment and lets see what is going on with you.

What Happens In A Homeopathic Consultation

When I meet someone for a homeopathic consultation, this is what is happening. I am:

  • Listening. Observing. Witnessing. So I can understand what the person is experiencing. Finding out what is bothering them, and how they experience it. What this is like for them.
  • Creating a place and space for someone to talk and to show who they are and what bothers them.
  • Listening to the spoken and the unspoken words. I often say, I am listening through.sculpture-2275202_1280
  • Watching, seeing, hearing, the hand gestures, body movements, facial expressions, sounds the person makes, and the words and language the person uses to express themselves.
  • Specifically, finding out about a symptom – what makes it better, worse, location, how experienced, when it first started, how it feels, other symptoms with it, how is it to have the symptom.
  • Putting all the pieces/parts together, making a whole picture of the person. Like a jigsaw puzzle, being put together. Or a painting being painted in front of me. But I don’t have the complete picture in front of me to know what the final outcome will be.
  • Learning the person’s world and their language. How they view their world. How they experience their world.
  • Giving a homeopathic remedy that is similar to this whole picture of the person.

Always Finding Out About The Person

What I describe here, is what I do whether the person has:

  • a chronic condition – ongoing, experiencing flare ups of symptoms periodically, never quite going away, such as eczema, menstrual difficulty, digestive issues, asthma, anxiety, auto-immune conditions and more.
  • an acute condition – the flu, a cold, an infection, a cough, a childhood disease. An acute could also be a flare up of the chronic condition.
  • a first aid situation – a fall, a trauma, dental work, surgery, a sprain/strain, a burn.

The length of time I spend with a person during a consultation may vary depending on whether it is a chronic, an acute, or a first aid situation. But always, always, I am finding out about the person – the what, and the how of what bothers them.

Look for Part 2 to this topic – the homeopathic consultation – in my next post.
