Physical Complaint – Door Into the Whole Person

People often say to me – I have a skin issue (or some other physical complaint) and this is what I want to be better; and, isn’t homeopathy just for physical complaints?

It is true that most of the time someone does come in for homeopathic care for a physical complaint, such as skin eruptions, digestive issues, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, ongoing pain, women’s issues, recurring colds, and more. But homeopathy addresses and doorheals the whole person. The physical complaint is many times the “door”, the opening to knowing more about the person. It is the starting place.

As The Patient Talks

As the person talks about their physical complaint, more comes out about them – the door opens. The person will talk about the sensations they experience; their feelings and emotions; how they look at the world; fears; dreams; reactions and responses to things happening in their life; their interests; and their history. This is all expressed through the words and the language used, the hand gestures that are made, and their body movements. The homeopath listens, observes, witnesses, and follows all of this.

Often, the physical complaint is reflecting where the individual person’s sensitivity lies – a particular part of the body, a particular discomfort or pain, the functioning of a part of the body. The physical complaint may be experienced more frequently when the person is feeling stressed, whether physically, emotionally, mentally, and/or spiritually stressed. We often hear people saying things like, my stomach just gets so upset when this happens (fill in the blank). Or I notice that my skin breaks out when ____________ . The physical complaint is not a separate part from the emotional or mental state. Everything is all connected.

One Woman

One woman came to homeopathy for a physical complaint. She had experienced a very severe head trauma, for which she was receiving treatment for, but she was experiencing lingering affects from the trauma and wanted more help. She had difficulty doing         particular tasks and her functioning ability was much lower than it had been before the trauma. She also had headaches. This was her “door”.

As she healed, her quality of functioning improved and her headaches decreased. She said she felt more relaxed about the events in her life and with the interactions with other smilepeople. I don’t get as worried as I used to, she said, and I don’t have the angst that I had before. The  healing with homeopathy helped with her physical complaint, and with her emotional and mental health as well.

Healing The Whole

Nothing is in isolation. The physical complaint is not separate from the whole. The physical complaint is often the “door” in, into hearing about the whole person. The healing is of the whole person – the physical complaint and more.

My Skin Always Bothers Me

I have had several patients come in for homeopathic care recently who are experiencing a skin eruption. For one, it is eczema, which they have experienced all of their life. For another it is vitiligo (leucoderma), a condition where white patches appear on the skin, especially after the skin has been bruised or scratched. Another person has bumps and rashes on the skin. And another has Hand, Foot and Mouth disease (Coxsackie Virus).

These patients are of all ages, ranging from young children to older adults. 3-handsAll of them have experienced an ongoing skin discomfort, for either a short time or for a good part of their lives.

Wanting To Get Relief

Most of the time, a skin eruption is very uncomfortable in some way. It is very itchy. It can be red and inflamed. It may ooze and/or bleed. It is painful. The person wants to scratch it, constantly. He may not want others to see it, feeling very embarrassed about it. And scarring may occur, affecting the texture/smoothness and tone of the skin. It seems to be ongoing, with some relief sometimes, but it is always there in some way.

People do many things to take care of their skin, wanting relief. They use creams, watch or change the foods they eat, try to monitor their stress levels, and keep the area as clean as possible. Cortisone creams are often proscribed. These creams may give relief, but they are not truly healing, and are in fact very suppressive. The skin may be better, but the person may develop other health issues, such as breathing difficulties or asthma, muscular pains, and other complaints.

(Suppression. The dictionary defines the verb suppress as “to put down by authority or force” and to “subdue”. And a suppressant is defined as “an agent (as a drug) that tends to suppress rather than eliminate something”.)

Healing The Whole Person

The skin eruption is not a separate issue; it is part of the whole picture. It is a reflection of a deeper systemic condition in the person. We hear the expression – “it is only skin deep”. That really is not true with skin issues; it is deeper than the skin. That is why using topical creams does not heal at the root core or cause of where the skin eruption is coming from. .

As each of the patients I mentioned above talked about having skin eruptions, I heard how it felt – itchy, burning, hot, and inflamed. I heard how they responded to the discomfort – wanting to rub it against something, scratching it till it bled. I heard what happened to the area – becoming infected, becoming a lighter skin tone once healed. I heard what made it better and what made it worse. As they told me these things, I was paying attention to the words and language they used, to the hand gestures and the body movements they made. They talked about other things bothering them as well. The young child wanted to be comforted more than usual. The school aged child wondered what his classmates thought if he made a mistake in class. The older person had a deep concern and desire to help other people. And more.

All of this – the skin, how they talked, how they responded to things happening in their life – are the pieces of the puzzle that fit together to make the whole picture of them. The given homeopathic remedy was similar and matched this wholeness, stimulating the person’s innate healing abilities.
