So Many Changes During Pregnancy, What To Do? Homeopathy Helps

I was happy to work with a woman over this past year as she went through her pregnancy. She started having homeopathic care before she was pregnant, continued during her pregnancy, and now after the birth of her baby. And I have a good friend who is pregnant, who is also receiving homeopathic care.

So Many Changes

With the women I have worked with during pregnancy, they initially came for homeopathic care before they were pregnant. They came for a specific reason, something that bothered them. They said also, that they were wanting and planning on becoming  baby-feet-1527456__340pregnant very soon, and in a way, they were coming to homeopathy to help get pregnant.

When they did become pregnant, we continued with the homeopathic remedy. As they moved through their pregnancy, other conditions, symptoms, or states came up. When this happened, and the homeopathic remedy that we were using did not help, another homeopathic remedy was given that addressed what the woman was now experiencing.

This happened several times over the course of my patient’s pregnancy; she needed several different homeopathic remedies. And my friend has also said that she too has needed several different homeopathic remedies. As always, the homeopathic remedy is similar to what the person is experiencing. As a woman goes through her pregnancy, the birth, the afterbirth, and being a mom to this new baby, she may need a different homeopathic remedy that fits her state.

These are some of the changes that may be experienced:

  • morning sickness – nausea, headache
  • becoming sick with a cold, flu, cough
  • specific food cravings – sugar, worse from eating sugary foods
  • fatigue
  • heart palpitations and heart fluterings
  • overly sensitive to odors, environment, foods
  • unable to get comfortable
  • position of the baby
  • anxiety
  • being very emotional
  • exhaustion, and bruising from the birth
  • postpartum – depression, overwhelmed, body changes, new responsibilities

Homeopathy Helps The Mother And The Baby

It is a good time for a woman to come to homeopathy before she is pregnant. She is getting care for herself, and creating a healthy “soil” in which the baby will grow. (Homeopathy is earth soilhelpful for the dad as well before the pregnancy. Same thinking, creating a healthy soil.) And it is good to continue using homeopathy during her pregnancy, and after. It is helping both herself and the baby.

When I work with young children, and older ones too, I ask the mother about her pregnancy – how it was for her; how she felt physically, emotionally, and mentally; was there anything particular going on at the time; how was the birth, and more. I have learned that during a pregnancy, the mother and the baby share the same state. This information about the mother’s pregnancy often helps me to understand a little bit more of what the child is experiencing.

Homeopathy is safe to use when pregnant and when nursing the baby. Homeopathy focuses on the whole person, and addresses the individual. Brene Brown’s RAISING STRONG

I have been reading Brene Brown’s latest book, RAISING STRONG. One of the things she writes about is the stories we tell to ourselves and to others, and how we experience the story in our lives. When telling the story, we usually have the same ending, feel the same responses, have the same reactions, say the same negative talk to ourselves, and more. We do not move on from this, once-upon-a-time-719174__340from the story. It is ingrained in us. It is like an automatic response.

Brene Brown continues to write that when we truly feel the emotions with a curiosity to know what the emotions are about, the person can change the story. Not changing what happened, but change how we look at the story. It is with curiosity that enables the person to see, recognize, feel, share, and show their emotions to themselves and to others. They are witnessing their story –  feeling the emotions and what this story was and is for them. It takes courage to do this. The story no longer has power over the person; the person has the power. In a way, they have rewritten the story, and they can move forward.

Stories We Tell

I notice with myself, that sometimes when there is a situation that bothers me or I don’t like, I will start saying something about the person who may be involved. I start telling a story. For example, I may comment that a friend went shopping instead of being with a family member. Then I stop myself, and say I am just making up a story about this person. Really I don’t know what or how this person is feeling.

The story I was making up was more of a reflection of me, not so much about the person I was making the story up about. It was about me and how I felt. I might be feeling hurt, angry, disappointed, wanting something to happen or not to happen.We really are always talking about ourselves, no matter who or what we are talking about. We are talking about what we are sensitive to, what bothers us.

Homeopathy To Heal

When a person comes for homeopathic care, there is always a story. It is a story of their life, events, situations, relationships, reactions, responses, how and when their physical complaint started, how they experience it, and more.

As a homeopath, I listen through the story. (An earlier post I wrote about listening through.) I am witnessing the patient, the whole person. (Actually, the patient by-looking-271128_960_720and I are witnessing together.) How does the patient feel in the story? What are the sensations in the body? How does it feel in the body? What language is used consistently? What responses come up?  What gestures or movements are made? What keeps coming up?

I listen through the actual events of the story. So often we get caught up in a story, in the details, such as who did this and who did that. I listen to what this story is, as an expression of/for this person. This expression reflects the person’s sensitivity, which is at the core or source of what bothers the person, manifesting in physical, emotional, and/or mental symptoms.

A homeopathic remedy is given that is similar to the whole person, to their sensitivity, to what bothers them. This homeopathic remedy stimulates the person’s innate healing ability. As the person heals, what brought them in for homeopathic care is better, and their particular sensitivity quiets down.

Homeopathy Helps When Having Dental Work

Recently, a new patient was planning on having dental work done in the near future, and wanted to know how homeopathy could be of help. I have used homeopathy for myself, for my two sons, and for other patients when they have had dental work. Homeopathy can be extremely helpful at these times.

Using Homeopathy When Having Dental Work

The use of homeopathy when having dental work is a first aid situation. It is helping someone through a particular procedure and the trauma from it. If there is a chronic state, in which the teeth have been affected, it would be best to see a homeopath to really get an in-depth picture of the whole person.

As always when using homeopathy, it is observing and listening to the patient, matching  what they are experiencing to a homeopathic remedy. (The main principle of homeopathy is The Law of Similars or Like Cures Like.) It is giving the homeopathic remedy that fits what the person is experiencing. One homeopathic remedy is used at a time.

Homeopathic Remedies

Here are a few homeopathic remedies that are useful when having dental work. They are helpful for both children and adults. I don’t suggest you treat yourself.

Arnica montana – Pain in the tooth after a filling , removal of fillings, or after an extraction. smile teethPerson feels sore and bruised. Helps with the trauma of the dental work – inflammation, swelling, black and blue. This may be the only homeopathic remedy you would use. To read more about Arnica montana.

Phosphorus – When there is excessive bleeding or when the area starts to bleed, a little later on from the procedure. A wet teabag placed on the area is also helpful. (You can use both). Phosphorus is also good when the person is not coming out of the anesthesia well (local or general), and experiencing lingering affects, such as nausea, sleepiness, “goofy”, and droopy.

Ruta grav – When there has been work on the gums. Also, when there is a “dry socket” (a membrane has not formed over the extraction area), which can be very painful since it is exposed.

Hypericum – Helps with nerve pain after drilling, and when there is discomfort after a root canal, or extraction. When the nerves have been injured. The pain radiates. If pain continues which Arnica montana did not help with.

Taking Care Of Yourself When You Are Taking Care Of Someone Else

I wrote a post about caregivers awhile ago. You can read that post here. I want to continue to write on this topic – taking care of yourself when you are taking care of a loved one.

When taking care of someone, we may very often put our own needs aside. We may say I don’t need to have down time, or sleep as much, or eat a good meal, or go for a walk, or ask for help. How can I ask for help, if I am the one who is the helper?

Caregivers

Caregivers are:

  • Mothers of new born babies, young children, teenagers, young adults.
  • Adult children taking care of their parents.
  • A partner taking care of their sick partner.
  • A family member (aunt, brother, niece, grandparent, uncle) taking care of another family member.
  • A father taking care of his children.
  • A parent – father or mother – financially being supportive of their family.
  • A friend who offers help and assistance
  • A health care practitioner who cares, listens and helps people.
  • An educator.

Basically a care giver is anyone who is caring for another person. Care giving is not only in clay handhelping someone with their physical needs, but also helping them emotionally, financially, with their education, feeling responsible for them, and more.

As a care giver, it is really important to take care of yourself. And so very often we put ourselves on the back burner. It is giving a hand to ourselves, as well as our loved one.

On A Personal Note

For me it is hard to hear or see when someone I love is in pain, doesn’t sleep well, doesn’t like what is happening in their life, is hurting physically or emotionally, is not getting their needs met, is stressed out about their life, or is falling down, literally. I want to help them immediately. I want to make it all better for them, even wanting the situation to go away completely.

Most of the time, I can’t really do this. I can’t make it all better, right away. At these times, I need to acknowledge and honor myself, my needs, my feelings, my responses, and say “it is okay that I feel this way”. And then move forward, to do what I need to do for my loved one, and for myself. And sometimes, for the loved one, it is just being with them, being there, and not really doing anything.

Taking Care Of Yourself

There may be activities or daily practices that you enjoy and help you in your life. Some of these could be taking a walk, being in nature, meditating, doing a creative activity, gardening, having a good cry, venting to someone, receiving a hug, talking to a close friend or therapist, seeing a good movie, taking a break, getting as much sleep as you can, having a massage, treating yourself to a good meal,having a good piece of chocolate and more.

Homeopathy can also be of help. If you are in a situation that is a prolonged care taking situation, and is difficult for you, you may want to see a homeopath for help. It will not just be help for a physical issue, but for what this situation means to you. We all have our own sensitivities, and very often when there is a stressful situation, our sensitivities are exasperated and come to the fore, expressed or manifested in physical symptoms, emotional responses, or just not feeling well.

When we are healthy, we are in a better place to handle the different situations that life brings to us. We are still affected by the situation and respond to them. But we are able to right ourselves, and know that we need to do the things that help ourselves, such as saying, I need to take a break, I need a day off, I need to ask for help. In the long run, this helps our loved ones as well.
